Personality trends & online forums

  • Disclaimer: I am not a psyc major. I am hardcore programmer who just likes to take a break from programming and think about different stuff (ideas)*

Lately, i have been thinking if it is possible to determine personality trends of a particular person by simply monitoring him/her on a forum? We all tend to have a “second” life on the web… whether we like it or not.

I am sure there are people here with much better background then me (and much more knowledge then i do) on this topic. What do you guys think? Is it worth doing research on a persons personality and use that data somehow?

sorry if this post makes no sense..

Re: Personality trends & online forums

Hmm good Q.

Some people happen to be themselves online.. I know however I am on here is how I am in real life. That’s usually a compliment from everyone but I know that it’s not always good to be so free :bummer: I knw i overshare but i duno how to “fix” it so to speak, coz I know watever I say will come back to haunt me..:hinna:

So with some people u kinda can, but with others you cant..there’s ppl who will not discuss thier private life, which is kewl, but then there are those who create whole other personas. And its the latter that are kinda disturbing and scary and i’d just rather not deal with..

Re: Personality trends & online forums

I don't think online forums reveal a person's true personality. Because some people start to act crazy or make themselves into some great hero/character/holyman/flirt etc. As for me, I'm the domestic goddess. PS you should see my place. (cough, cough).

Re: Personality trends & online forums

Sara: Interesting. I will get back to it after a few thoughts :)

Saimanyc: I thought that was what my question was pointing towards (sorry if it wasn't clear) .. websites such as Friendster, My Space and SecondLife.com are very good examples of what i am pointing towards. These sites are getting hits in millions because people feel safer to live a "virtual" life online and interact with those who "seem" similar to themselves..

Its the whole new "social networking" thing that i am trying to get my head around. its big interms of business market.

Blogs are another way to display "personality" online.

Re: Personality trends & online forums

real public life may also not be something that reveals a person’s true personality. People put on a diff face for the world to see. there are few ppl who are the way they are in their public life or online as they really are.

Re: Personality trends & online forums

Mr.Fraudia, yes, I agree with you.

Re: Personality trends & online forums

I have multiple personalities

:LB:

Re: Personality trends & online forums

yeah . there's the basic point . i have figured out that there's a vast difference b/w what ppl think and what ppl do .. also there's a vast difference b/w what ppl show and what ppl are .

so it's not easy to judge some1 or to jump to conclusions abt some1's personality

Re: Personality trends & online forums

The cause of discourse may lay in the fact that people think these online forums are not for real, anything they say will not be held against them in real life. So, they become a little bit relax, un-wise or way to extreme with their thoughts .

I have not met many people in real life who are contributors in online forums like Gupshup but really interested in hearing stories how the preception and reality of the whole situation is.

Re: Personality trends & online forums

^Basically u jus wanna meet guppies :D

Re: Personality trends & online forums

I guess because there are some guppies that I am most impressed with...like ehsan bhai. I think he has been watching Cricket for so long, I don't know, I guess someone like him where I can just sit and absorb all the information and matches I missed. I think that is what online forums do to you, especially when you come across someone who is credible.

There are other people to in other online forums that I want to meet. Let's see when that day comes.
