I have been training for a while now at the gym. Normally I go there and do my own thing for about an hour and then go home. Recently I met a guy there and he helped me with some exercises that I wouldn’t do by myself, because you need a partner for them because of the weights involved. Also he pushed me harder than I do when training alone. Just by having a guy shouting at you to do an extra two reps, does wonders.
My body was aching more than it normally does because of that bit extra intensity of training. So I am now arranging to train with him regularly.
Is it better to train with a partner or a personal trainer than just by yourself?
Re: Personal trainers/Partners
I usually do fine doing any form of cardio on my own. In fact I prefer it. Sometimes partners can slow you down especially if they are not as enthusiastic about it as you are.
If you are using free weights (that are heavier then you can manage) then you should always have a partner that can spot you...first and foremost for safety reasons but also for encouragement. When you are bench pressing you cant keep increasing the weights unless you have someone spotting you.
Re: Personal trainers/Partners
You are saying that when training with free weights it is useful to have a partner, but not necessary for cardio. I would agree with that.
Re: Personal trainers/Partners
its definitely better and more fun with a personal trainer - if only they weren't so expensive. i used to see mine twice a week and man, the wonders she worked on me in two hours a week... you'd think you'd need more than that, but if you have a good trainer, thats all you need! i was even eating normally so imagine if i'd been eating super healthy... i love trainers! but its also really important to find one that you like and get along with so when they yell at you, you know not to take it personally. i was paying mine $80 a session so i had to stop pretty quickly. boo! but i'm saving up again cos i had so much fun and seeing results super fast was great.

^ that’s so expensive
how about the personal trainers you find in the gyms? they dont charge. are they any good?
Re: Personal trainers/Partners
You mention the high cost of a personal trainer. I would suggest to get a trainer for just 1/2 months and then after that you would need to use a trainer. It is definately worth getting one as it speeds up progress, you learn to train properly and are motivated. After you have got into the routine of things you can continue on your own without a trainer.
Re: Personal trainers/Partners
Unless the guy is there with you, observing you, monitoring you, motivating you, instructing you how to do things properly, making a program for you to work on then then its not personal training.
Re: Personal trainers/Partners
At my job there's always a group of guys who come in and work out together. Another guy whose there for hours every day, he's always helping everybody else out as well. (all desi guys). i get together with one girl though once a week cz thats the only time we have time to work out together. but rest of the week, i just get lazy...:(
okay so this si a weird Q, but what's a good price to pay someone? keep in mind they're not certified to train, they're studying health and fitness but since they're just student, its more of a workout-buddy thing..than anything else. But she did respond to me cz i said i wanted a really cheap trainer. so how much is good? I was thinking 5-8?
Re: Personal trainers/Partners
Certified trainers may have fixed rates which they may reduce reluctantly although probably not by a lot. A lay person does not have rate as such and you pay whatever you negotiate with the person. You can still get a lot out of them.
Even if you have to pay a bit more than you want to its worth it to get you started. When you feel comfortable doing it by yourself, then you can stop the arrangement with the person, and just carry on with the regime.
Re: Personal trainers/Partners
IMO...you dont NEED a personal trainer. Unless you are the type that doesnt feel motivated enough to do it on your own.
Personally, I have been working out for many years now and have been doing just great without em. I read and research on my own and have also learned and worked out with more experienced people (like friends) that have taught me about form and proper techniques. You also pick up things along the way.
You dont need a trainer to learn all this. but it's always nice of course.

Not everybody has the advantage of being able to do research beforehand and to work with experienced people. I have been doing it myself as well, but I am going to try working with someone else for a couple of months as I think it would benefit me, as my training would be that much more intense. You can only benefit from the other persons years of experience and training. You don't have to use a personal trainer, however if you are starting out on your own for the first time, then it can be useful.

absolutely sir.. it is absolutely better to workout with a partner rather than alone... i workout with a couple of my buddies... and we all push each other more than their limits..and the next days...the muscles that we targeted are sore like hell...( most of the time ..although being sore is not an indication that u had a good workout )... this is not the case when i workout alone...with nobody with me... so having a partner is a good thing.. (not to mention its even better to have a partner who has the same goals as u do)..
i've also been working out for more than 4 years now..and alhamdolillah i achieve whatever i aim for... i've got the perfect bulk with perfect cuts. Alhamdolillah...im very satisfied with the way i look physically.... most of the people at gym come to me and ask me if i've used 'roids..and i feel good about myself knowing that people think that the body that i have achieved can only be achieved by using 'roids... :)

I concur. You have to have some kind of motivation in order to be able to purchase a gym membership, continue to use it's services regularly and march along in healthy diet eating habits. Personal trainers are best for some people, others feel more comfortable by coming in and doing things their own way, and everyone has their ways. The benefits of having a trainer is that you have a certain time limit in which you are pushed to the maximum (and then some), and after a session of 30, 45 or 60 minutes, you feel like you have conquered the world.
For partners, it is best how one feels about going the gym. Some go in to socialize, while others have motives and goals.
