Personal Statements

Don’t you think that the worst part of filling out an application to professional school or grad school is the personal statement part. At least I truly hate it! I’m not a bad writer but when somebody asks me Why I want to do what I want to do, it is kind of hard to write an essay about it.
So people who have written personal statements and have been successful in getting into professional schools, tell me, how do you make something ordinary that everybody is going to write, sound extraordinary?

Re: Personal Statements

i hate it, i hate writing papers so i simply freaking hate that crap. who knows, may be to make things easier they might have em in multiple choice in the future. or not :cb:

Re: Personal Statements

I suppose I now sit on the other side of the fence… but I too used to think that personal statements (aka statements of purpose) are merely a formality. However, over the years I’ve realized that schools invest their professional and monetary resources in imparting graduate level education to candidates and this is just one way to screen serious applicants from non serious ones. As an academic who supervises graduate students regularly, I don’t want to advise and supervise students who’re in school without a clear purpose and a sense of enthusiasm. Just applying to graduate school isn’t really enough of an indicator of one’s intention and motivation… some students just apply for the sake of applying and we need to evaluate their applications somehow to decide who is worthy of enrolment, deserves scholarships etc.

In any case, my suggestion is to write a personal statement as a narrative of your life experiences related to education and professional work and describe the moments of truth that inspired you to apply to grad school. In doing so, you should outline your objectives of pursuing graduate studies and your intended outcomes. A personal statement doesn’t have to be grand… it can be simple… as long as its logical, succinct, and interesting to read.

I remember sharing my personal statements on GS from my MBA as well as my PhD admissions… I’m sure you’ll find those threads through the search tools. If you like, I can PM you a copy as well.
