Re: personal hygiene among desis
PPL doing labour jobs in pakistan DONOT smell bad!!!
probably because they sweat profoundly , and bad chemical washed away,
Usually its the ppl who don't take shower every day and think, their shirts are good for couple more days.
Re: personal hygiene among desis
It an defrinatley an issue.
It has to do with the lack of awareness of what is clean and what is not. I think it's present in every culture.
chinese folks and the green teeth
african american with the braided hair
european people and their disgusting baths
americans and with the dog and cat hair all over their clothes.
In desi culture:
Most aunties are not even aware that when you fry onions what that smells like for the whole day. This is my dad's biggest annoyance - he will fabreeze my mom while she is cooking. He keeps jackets, his shoes upstairs. Open all thedoors even if it - 30 degrees outside. But he likes the food!
I don't know why but the older aunties don't know about brushing their teeth. I find that alot in Chinese older women as well. This gets espicaially bad in ramadan!
I think there was a thread about not washing your clothes (desi clothes).
This is pet peeve - why don't people wear underwear in pakistan? It's not the heat because I have seen aunties having the same issues here in US.
People reuse their undergarments after wearing them for a day (socks, undershirts, bras, yes even boxers and underwear)
So I don't think only deoderant is the issue. Most people think if they wazu 5 times a day - that's good enough.

Re: personal hygiene among desis
the ivy league guy, the phds, - i have noticed them to be either extremely disturbed that they can't tell the difference between BO and perfume or they are extremely cautious having OCD.
anyways, last I was in Pakistan, a year ago (landed and BB was shot later that evening), I did not notice any smell. even when I went into the gaoN, nothing. of course you will notice the smell on the hard working class, that's to be expected, they can barely afford bread, talk about deo.
with this media, the awareness is there now, more and more people starting to use deo, i guess.
but i would like to add, the cleanliness we don't get to see, is present in Pakistan, totally opposite in the west.. if you know what i mean...
Re: personal hygiene among desis
^ ppl calm down.
now what is IVY ??
What is OCD???
There are some half brain dead on this forum, plz use less terms. :(
wouldnt that be LMGTFY?
by** ivy** league they mean…top 8 (i think it is) ranking universities that are known for their academic excellence and prestige here in the states.
OCD = Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
sheesh!..monks know nothing ![]()

Re: personal hygiene among desis
I think lack of awareness has to do with it and mostly this is the problem with Desis, Chineese or other immigrants who get job and socialize in the community.
I mean if a desi Guy with BO or desi girl with smell of ginger is working at desi place with other 10 desis smelling the same (ok some being garlic, onion etc), no one notices. I have seen people who work in environment not dominated by their ethnicity being more careful about it coz normally they figure out that other people are noticing it.
Re: personal hygiene among desis
There was this scare that women can develop breast cancer if they regularly use deodorant. Does any one has more info on that?
Re: personal hygiene among desis
enya, i think it was about anti perspirants and not just deodorants.
they do have more organic type deodorants for those who are interested btw.
anyways guys so what is a sensitive way to tell a larger group of people about hygiene? I know some masjids send newsletters to people, a topic there perhaps? or covered in some radio show (Jibs- I am looking to you for this one if you read this), articles in the desi newspapers/magazines?
Re: personal hygiene among desis
Enya that scare involved using anti perspirants which block sweat and hence create situations that may cause cancer.
X2, if there's community outreach programs in your area via masjid newsletters, lectures, etc., I'd say that's a good way.
I'm going to be doing a newsletter for our local masjid school...and I plan on doing an article on that. Let's see how that is received!
Re: personal hygiene among desis
X2 did I tell you about this radio show that a Doctor has here…and one day he was giving such detailed advice…He was talking to some desi about personal hygiene and started telling him on the phone like"there is a thing that you put underarms..its called a DEODRANT…
…and then he went in detail about the proper way of taking a gusal(the Islamic way)…
It was funy to hear though…I bet he helped a lot of Desis listening to her.
