Persistent Vegetative State

Re: Persistent Vegetative State

If brain not functioning is the sole test of death I've then encountered a few right in these boards! In their interest I'd add to that non functioning brain, non-functioning internet cnxn as a further requirement. :)

Also just for the records, I think mouth2mouth is a part of cpr.

Btw, one of the responses brings up a corollary question - are muslims not supposed to donate their organs (Eye, heart, kidney etc)? BecaUse such donation by an adopted son to adoptee father or vice versa will make them literally blood relatives. Or a less macabre version - if blood donation occurs betweek them.

Re: Persistent Vegetative State

What the heck did you just say?

Re: Persistent Vegetative State

It is in Allah's hands to give people life and take their life. If a machine would be haraam why is it existing then?

It might be not a good example, but is cancer really not curable even when the doctors tell you, you have no chance? Allah is the one who decides about you and not a doctor, in the end.

My aunty died of cancer. 2 weeks before she left this world, nurses were holding her hands, they were crying and telling her that she will die. Wtf is this? If Allah wants, he can, but people are blind, hopeless, don't believe in a wonder, don't believe in a wonder called God.

plus do we really get the treatment we need? that's offtopic but look for the book called Big Pharma...

Persistent vegetative state is not one whose brain has died.Persistent vegetative or locked in syndrome are the people whom brain have demaged and they could do nothing. Actually brain injury is not all the time same ,it is different and case to case. Anywhere in the world it is not called death. Question is this that is it correct to keep one alive on feeding tube or not. As a Muslim we can not think about it. We believe that God is mercyfull and we should keep looking to his kindness. I am father of one persistent vegetative state. My son Jawad Pasha when he was 23 found injured at one hospital with some unknown accident on 13th September 2004 and since than he is totally disable like locked in syndrome. It was a very severe head injury and doctors told us that survival is near to impossible and even when he was out of some danger doctors were in opinion that he could not improve. In case of Jawad Pasha for the years we presumed it locked in syndrome because there was no communication except some times blinking eyes in yes, even up to now. Later smiling and laughing was added so we could know he is happy. We are still unsure about his diagnoses. My youngest son Ubaid Pasha who was 23 was kidnapped for ransom on 5th March2007,the same day on which he completed his computer degree and kidnappers received the ransom but they killed him and his body was found after arrest of the kidnappers and one of killers was the person who supplied medical equipment for my son Jawad. My son was a Hope for me and his elder disable brother,No one can image how much hard the life is.But we are struggling. We have no way to know what we can do now.It is 4th year of whole night awakening with my son.I don't know why god selected me for this all but thanks to god he gave me courage to fight. Anwer Kamal Pasha; (Father)

Re: Persistent Vegetative State

^ nice name.... why dont u spell it as "enver" rather than anwar

to be honest I dont think ulema have given it much thought [but i cud be wrong], there are numerous discussions when muslim doctors associations meet I have never heard PVS or ACLS being declared illegal

May Allah give your son health, Inshallah, and give you sabr. While I do not want to be one to give false hope but PVC is a very ill defined and almost unquantifiable term, not as clear as other medical conditions. There have been many cases where people improved over time, and were even conscious of those who were around them during the time. One person, who woke up from a sustained coma complained after regaining consciousness about a doctor who used to tell his students during rounds that she would never wake up. Inshallah I hope one day your son joins you like before.

that is a stupid question, if some one is dying u should help them

use your brain, using it is not haram

questions like these are the reason muslims are in an idiotic state.

Giving blood = become blood relatives? How?

Re: Persistent Vegetative State

The brain has been damaged beyond repair. The person is not conscious, is not calculating anything, and it entirely unaware of their life. It's not even sleeping, because there are no dreams. The person will never wake up.

So basically, you're just feeding calories into a body that can never walk, move, or think ever again.

Me? I'd want the plug pulled. There's no life left. I wouldn't even be aware of it.

I can't say I know what the ruling is in Islam, it could go either way. But in the end, god is merciful, and we are human. We make mistakes. And we do what we think is best.

Re: Persistent Vegetative State

^ there have been many cases of people diagnosed as 'persistently' vegetative, who have recovered (upto 30% according to one study). many people have dreamless sleep too, there is no life left, they are not even aware that they are sleeping. the only reason their relatives dont kill them at that point is that we know they will wake up tomorrow.
