Has anyone here ever had a period-themed mehendi or wedding, i.e. art deco or mughlai or victorian or mod 60’s indian-movie style?
We are planning on wearing ghararas and doing our hair and makeup in the 60’s style with big hair and flowers in our do’s, and winged eyeliners for my brother’s wedding iA, so I was curious to see if anyone else has done it. It seems like so much fun to plan your decor, favors, cake, events, etc. in a vintage theme.
And if you had to choose an era, which would you pick for your events? How would you make it appropriately themed? What do you best associate with a certain period? Like, for example, for me, the 60s is saris and beehive’s and simply cuts to clothing and winged eyeliner, and any Victorian influences pretty much revolve around beautiful, flourishy fonts.
Re: Period-themed weddings?
Yaah, hubby and I had a 70s Bollywood style wedding.
He dressed up as Rajesh Khanna and I was Sharmila Tagore. He walked in nodding his head as if it were falling off, and singing “merey sapnon ki rani” while I sharmaoed till my eyes hurt. Then our guests followed in slow motion while the crew made sure we had enough fans blowing to create a windy day effect. The grand finale was mild rain showers and a song around the peepal ka tree. Then I changed into a 30lb saree but hubby had no issues carrying me and nodding merrily as he walked through the cheering crowd.

the interesting part is that 70s Bollywood style wedding took place in 1967. Yup we were always ultra modern.

omg awesome!!!
Re: Period-themed weddings?
I think Reha is planning something like this for her sister's mehandi too
Re: Period-themed weddings?
i dressed up as a 60s herione for my brother's mehndi - the puff, parande, flowers, short kameez..everyone loved it.
on a family friend's mehndi a few years later, all the sisters did the same thing but wore ghararas.
then last summer, on another family friend's mehndi, again the girls did the same thing with ghararas.
frankly, i think the 60s is over done.
im loving the 40s. thats hot.
SGCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC!!! Mere dil ki baat kehdiiiiiii!
I love love love themed parties! Yeah, my sisters and I were doing it but I am getting soooo much opposition right now because they all want to wear the new lambi kameez thats out these days. I wanted to wear kamkhaab ghararas and do the whole look but we shall see. ![]()
On a lighter note, we DID manage to find my MOM’S 33 year old Kamkhaab VALIMA GHARARA!!!
It was buried deep in the garage but since it was stored so well it still looks GORGEOUS Mashallah. So, the bride - my youngest sister - will be wearing it on her mehndi. We got a new shirt and dupatta and will be getting the gharara touched up just a little bit. She will definitely be sporting the 70’s look. Aaaaah, cant wait!

Re: Period-themed weddings?
^ Your sister is a lucky girl! There is something so special about wearing your mom's/grandma's clothes. I WISH I had that opportunity!
Re: Period-themed weddings?
^ me too :(
Re: Period-themed weddings?
my mommy's wearing her own kamkhaab valima gharara to my bro's wedding iA! its gorggggeous- a shade somewhere between purple and dark blue with dull gold motifs all over. she's getting a new gold shirt and purple/blue dupatta made with it with some kaam. its gonna be tres, tres elegant! yay for my mom! :)
reha, nice one for your sister! what color is your mom's gharara?
my mom even has her shaadi one- its shocking pink with very bright gold- very typical of that era too.
Re: Period-themed weddings?
omg I would do something either in an Elizabethan or Regency (Jane Austen) theme!
Re: Period-themed weddings?
^ beautiful! i can just picture lots of lace and flourishes and big fat peonies and roses in whites and creams and blush pinks. faint
(you could do your kiddo's nursery up in that theme too! :))
