I don't know....may be You can become addicted and stuff and can't bear pain even when it's not severe.
Btw, I like period pains, they're therapeutic but they've gone lesser after having babies. :(
About staying active? Yes it does help in a way, you keep yourself busy in things and don't really give the pain much thinking.
NSAIDS are non-addictive.
Taking a few for one, maybe two days of a period isn't going to adversely effect the vast majority of people.
I really think you have no clue about how severe period pains and dysmenorrhea can be. It isn't some little twinge in your abdominal region that you can deal with or overcome with exercise. For the last few years my periods on the whole have been a bit painful but nothing that has stopped me going to work or functioning normally, most months I have no need for ibuprofen any more. If this is how yours have always been, you are very lucky and you have no idea how bad it can get.
If you did your reading, you would know that cramps are caused by uterine contractions to expel the lining. In most women, these are mild contractions for some dysmenorrhea sufferers they can be worse that *typical *childbirth contractions.
When they were really bad, I could actually time the length of a cramp and the time between them.
I heard from a Persian lady that Cinnamon bun or anything with cinnamon is best remedy for period cramps/pains. I have also heard that eating a Banana or warm milk with honey helps a lot!
I get pretty bad pain during my first 2 days.. like all I love the warm bottle.. after having the baby my pain is not quiet as bad as it used to be.
I have tried herbal remedies but when you are in school or college I have/ had to take motrin infact my aunt who is OBGYN had suggested taking it a day before your period as it helps with the muscle contractions before you have your period.. I personally have never tried this but for some of the people on really painful side this might help.
Take milk, haldi wala milk, use hot water bottle or warm patches.
Let me just say, try to eat lots of fruits and vegetables and have a balanced diet. I have heard from my GP that if you eat a balanced diet your pain should be OK. Not severe. Anyway eating a balanced diet is good for the mind body and soul, so yeh.

i thought i was the only one it happened to! i dunno why, but i always get diarrhea during this time. does anyone know why it happens?
It's not completely understood but the thought is that the contractions effect the bowels so this can cause diarrhea. Combined with the fact that you retain a lot of water during the pre-menstrual and first few days.
I don't get it but when the contractions are more severe, as soon as I eat I will need to go to the bathroom. Everything gets pushed out.
I also suffered from period pains in early days but I am cured by homoeopathic medicine Named Pulsatilla 30 I used it 10 drops three times a day and Now I am well and thankful to Homoepathy
period pains is normally felt by every lady but if it is unbearable so the medication is necessary and for this consultation with a qualified doctor is imperative to diagnose the disease and to help the patient.

you may try a Homoeopathic medicine named Belladona 200 during pain with interval of 2-4 hours. It is the best medicine for the symptoms you described above.
