I just wanted more information about this and find out who did this and whether or not it helped?
When are you suppose to start this and what type of oil is best to use?
To be honest I’m not even sure i know exactly where the perineum is! Does anyone know any good websites…with diagrams? sorry if this sounds sick but i really want to avoid tearing…the pain of being stiched up is even worse than labour!
Yes i did tear but only a bit...it took the midwife about 5 mins to stitch me up so i don't think it was bad and they numb the area when they stitch you so you don't feel them doing that but boy was i in pain for the next few days i was terrified to go for a wee let alone no.2. I think i cried in the toilets as the stinging pain was too much when going for a wee. I honestly found this to be much more painful than the birth itself.
I'm confused, would i have felt the stinging etc even if i didnt tear/have stitches? i mean is that normal after birth anyway? The thought of that makes me shudder. I have promised myself to try the perineal massage this time....i knew about it first time too but didn't llike the thought of it...but a girl from my NCT class did it and she didn't tear at all!
Did u try to wash ureself with warm water? Its meant to hurry up the healing process... It didnt hirt me when i peed but i did feel a sting when doing number 2....but that went away after a week....
Is wee the same as peeing? Why did it sting then? U sure u werent dehydrated and mistaking the burning pain with the stitch pain? Its all the same under there and easy to confuse the diff parts....
Also.... How the midwife works ure below area makes a huge difference.... My midwife was doing everything i had read on perineal massage.... I think that helped a lot....
Now i know u dont have any power over that when ure in delivery... So
Its definately worth a trr to massage ureself.... But i think the man is gonna havta help u...just cuz of the hard to reach area. Read many great reviews....
and then this girl Ramsha on GS did it too and didn't expwerience any tear.. it was in her baby story!!
Did you get a book from your clinic?? I have three books and i know at least one has the description with pics.. I am not surew hich one..my friend gave me what to expect while expecting and I got two from the clinic, your pregnancy and birth and your body, your pregnancy..s omething like that!!!
and I am sure you can google the pics and instructions!!
I havent taken any birth classes yet so I dunno for sure but I have read that they recommend it in the last few weeks of pregnancy but Ramsha said she did it all along and had a good experience!!
I did it about a minute at a time 3 times a week for week 36 and 37 and then everyday for about a min for the rest of my pregnancy.
SGC - baby was 6 pounds 12 oz but had a pretty big head...don't worry too much about what the ultrasounds say....I was told my baby would be 9 pounds.
The other thing that helped me were the midwives, they used olive oil during the pushing phase, and trying to control the TMI but when the head was coming out two midwives had their finger in there and were streching the skin out as well. The other thing that I think helped was that my epidural was turned way down so I could feel the stretch and controlled my pushing...also the midwives let me push when I wanted and for how long I wanted, so there were contractions when I would push 2-3 times and contractions when I would push only once because the burn was too strong.
Sparrow - I did feel a little stinging after the birth when I went to the bathroom but I made sure to drink lots of water and used the squirty bottle and it went away rather quickly
Your midwives sound excellent! The midwives here would never do that. So did they apply olive oil on that whole area at the pushing phase? That's a great idea... Where did u have ur baby? I wonder if they would do that in the UK if I put it in my birth plan?
Your advice on perineal massage is very very helpful. Thanks xxx

Yes, as soon as I started pushing they used the oil, they were excellent, I had my baby at a hospital.
I'll be at Mt Sinai for my delivery iA and the nurses there want you to bring your olive oil to the hospital with you so they can do the same. Let's see what happens!
wow i cant even imagine the midwives here offering such a thing.. i like my midwifery center but I felt like they rushed me through the 12th and 16th weeks appt.. they really didnt have much to offer... i wonder if anyone else had similar experiences in the US!!!
GUys ask bout it... Its new to us mothers.... But its general knowledge to midwives.... Who knows... Maybe its all bout bribging ure own oil and they will be willing to do it ....
Good Luck SGC....my midwife did mention that its becoming a common practice in the GTA, more and more nurses and doctors are taking an active role in protecting the womens perinium....I've heard great things about L&D at Mt Sinai
