perfect wedding outfit or mum's wedding outfit?

I love the idea of wearing mum’s saree for my baraat because it will be romantic and sentimental and I can honor my parents in that way. However her saree is a bit simpler than the bridals that we have these days, given that they were married almost 30 years ago. mum’s saree is a beautiful red and gold heavy silk banarasi. If I were to buy something new, it would still be red and gold, but some things would be different. The shade of red would be brighter and I would want something a bit heavier in terms of kaam, weave, etc. It would probably be a different material, more light weight, maybe a tissue or chiffon banarasi .
What are your opinions? Should I get something new which will be exactly what I wanted? Or wear something that is not-so-perfect but has lots of emotions attached to it?

Re: perfect wedding outfit or mum's wedding outfit?

i wore my mums red kamkhaab ka gharaara for my baraat... only hers was a simple kamkhaab/banarsi gharaara with no kaam on it whatsoever...so this is what I did i got a purple jamawar shirt and dull gold chiffon.jamawar dupatta to go with it and had kaam done on all three pieces...

i still got to wear her gharaara and i had it revamped to meet today's standards...you can do the same for your mum's saree you can have additional kaam done on it and get a very ornate blouse to go with it

or the other option is you can wear the saree as is on your nikkah/mehndi and wear your perfect wedding outfit on your baraat

Re: perfect wedding outfit or mum's wedding outfit?

^that sounds lovely! I'd love to see a picture of that, if you don't mind sharing!

however, my thing is that because it's a saree, there is little room for "revamping. i'm not sure if I want to alter the saree with any kaam. The thought of wearing it at the nikkah also entered my mind, but then I would be repeating colors (since I really want to wear red and gold for my baraat).

What to do?

You can always wear the saree after, I don't think it's THAT big of a deal to have to wear it on the baraat. Wear your dream outfit....

Re: perfect wedding outfit or mum's wedding outfit?

i wore my moms gharara on my mehndi and everyone loved the idea!

Re: perfect wedding outfit or mum's wedding outfit?

im doing the same wearing my moms gharara on my mehndi... it was really heavy so i have asked my mom to get a long shirt made on it in chunri and gotta =/ no idea how it will turn out to be... but in any case i will be happy when i will wear it =)

Re: perfect wedding outfit or mum's wedding outfit?

why dont u make a long dupatta out of it and get it heavy with work... alternativley u can also make a gown out of it!!!

Re: perfect wedding outfit or mum's wedding outfit?

yeah you can either convert the sari into something else (dupatta, shirt, gharara, etc). Or just wear it on your nikkah. I think as llong as the color around your face is different on the ruksati day, it will give a different look.

Re: perfect wedding outfit or mum's wedding outfit?

Honestly, the saree is practically vintage, I wouldn't change it to anything or add kaam to it.

Why not get your dream lengha and wear the saree on your first wedding anniversary?

Re: perfect wedding outfit or mum's wedding outfit?

^ thats what i did. well, it wasn't mum's wedding saree but it was one of her nicest ones and it was banarasi silk, red and gold too. very elegant and i even wore the blouse she made herself.

if you really want to, you can also dress up your mum's saree with heavy jewellery, and you'll have fancy hair and makeup anyway. it will look bridal, i'm sure of it. i really, really, really wouldn't do any kaat peet or changes to the saree. its vintage! they don't make 'em like that anymore!

Re: perfect wedding outfit or mum's wedding outfit?

I'm not planning to cut/change/add kaam on it either. I want to leave it as is. You're right about these sarees being practically vintage. The quality is just not the same anymore.

I guess I can try wearing it with the jewelry, ghoonghat and everything else and see how it looks and then figure out whether I should wear it for the baraat or the nikkah or pack it away iA for my first anniversary.

Re: perfect wedding outfit or mum's wedding outfit?

you could totally get a HEAVY red (both the saree one and the brighter shade that you would want) and gold Duppata to do the traditional head covering and ghoonghat (if you want) and team it up with heavy jewelry and lotsa gold and red bangles...... one of the weddings i attended recently, te bride had done te same with a purple saree and it looked major hot......
sorry no pictures as it was an acquaintance's wedding...

p.s., don't mind te missing Hs... keyboard is hungry i guess.....
