Perfect Cake Pops recipe?

So i’m planning my baby girl’s first birthday party and want to make cake pops at home.

does anyone have a tried and tested recipe that looks good and tastes good?

i tried making them once by crumbling the cake + adding frosting and mixed using mixer. refrigerated balls for a bit, then dipped in chocolate.

they tasted ok (a bit too sweet- maybe too much frosting?), but didn’t look so nice. they were round, but not hard and the sticks didn’t stick.

anyone else try making them successfully?

please share your step by step recipe and pictures if you have them

thanks

Try making them with the cake pop maker or a thing bakepops. U can just use regular cakemix and bake them in the mold and all u have to do is frost n decorate.

easier said than done :)

i've tried making them before, but they just didn't turn out the way i hoped.

anyone else?

Re: Perfect Cake Pops recipe?

I make them on a regular basis. Your balls are probably too big if they’re not staying on the stick. I have a simple-ish tutorial on my blog. I’ll do a more detailed one in a couple of days: Balls of Cake (and heavenly goodness) « Yummiez in yo tummiez.

Re: Perfect Cake Pops recipe?

thanks! i just checked out your blog. at what point did you put the cake ball on the stick? and do you dip the stick in chocolate before putting it in the cake ball?

Re: Perfect Cake Pops recipe?

I probably should've specified that. Yes, make sure you dip the stick in chocolate first. Real chocolate can get a little heavy. Buy almond bark.. You can get it at Walmart or any other grocery store. Put some food color in it.. Otherwise you can buy colored candy melts at any craft store (Michael, Jo Ann, etc).

So for cake pops.. I make the cake balls and pop them in the freezer for at least 30 mins.. Take 'em out, put 'em in the fridge for at least 15 mins before coating. At that point, dip your stick in your melted whatever and put it in the cake pop. At this point you can put the cake pop upside down on a tray.

(Eventually you'll want a styrofoam block from a craft store. I've updated my post with a picture of my pops on a block.)

You can coat the pop after the initial dip dries and stick it in the block. If you dipping liquid is too thick, add some shortening in it.

Hope this helps! :)

Re: Perfect Cake Pops recipe?

awesome. thanks :)

btw- what does almond bark taste like? chocolate? also, if i dont have shortening...what else can i use?

Re: Perfect Cake Pops recipe?

The white one tastes just like chocolate.. Actually, both of them do. They're really good! I've made cake balls for a lot of events and people love them. I usually just use almond bark 'cuz it's much cheaper than candy melts.

I tried using oil and that was a fail. Butter maybe? I'm not sure. Shortening is your best bet. That's also available at Walmart.

Re: Perfect Cake Pops recipe?

ok, so since you seem to be an expert on cake balls :)

any idea how i can make minnie mouse cake balls? should i use chocolate/candy melts to make minnie ears and or actual cake/frosting mixture?

Re: Perfect Cake Pops recipe?

I’m not an expert by any means but bakerella is. Here’s her way of making them: Minnie Mouse Cake Pops | Food | Disney Family.com

Wilton’s edible pen sucks. See if you can find a different brand though.

Re: Perfect Cake Pops recipe?

thanks! my sister and i tried to make them this weekend...and had success! :). we used white almond bark on half and wiltons chocolate on the other half. nailed the taste and did rather well on presentation.

still have to figure out how to keep the chocolate melted long enough to coat the balls so they look nice and smooth.

do you swirl the cake ball in the chocolate to coat them? whats the best way without having the ball fall off the stick and to get an even, smooth coating?

Re: Perfect Cake Pops recipe?

If your chocolate starts to get hard, just microwave it for 10-15 secs and add a tiny bit more shortening.

Also, I tilt the bowl I'm using sideways. I take the pop in at a 45 degree angle and bring it out directly. To get the excess off, just tap your wrist lightly multiple times instead of actually shaking the stick.
