in my recent visit to Pakistan, whenever i discussed something i mean any bad thing, ppl always associate it to the area ppl are living in and they will stop me from further bragging that “aray yaar wo to wahan k hain, tum un say or kia expect kero gee”.
ok lets start off with defense:
Defense, Clifton, (it is bahadarabad, or Muhammad Ali Society…kher what ever taht posh area is)…it is like a status symbol to own a place there. where as these area all lack the basic commodities that any shelter must accommodates…i.e. Water, Electricity, and foremost Security.
eating out in Pizza Hut, KFC, Mcdonalds , and grocery shopping from D-Mart, Aghas, Imtiaz.
Universities and Schools. i got to hear a lot that if some is beconite, or from city school that he/she is forsure “bigra howa”. even rivalries exist among the uniserities, which i dont think is bad, but it becomes dirty when ppl start bringing in some individual character and destroy the entire image of any institution. and if someone goes to schools-institution in defense-clifton area…they some how become “Burger” …ooo and their accent.
ps. usually ppl are always talking about defense areas…why no one never talks about macher colony? or the unimaginative lifestyle of layari. :o
Back in my days, we had this impression that Girls from Saint Joseph and PECHS college are too forward thinking while those from APWA and Abdullah College are Chaadar maar, backward ..
PECHS, Delhi Colony, Sindhi Muslim Society, Bahadurabad, KDA housing society... the jaddi pushti rich. likely to speak angrezi with a british affectation. drink things like grape juice and were hip to the western music scene even before alamgir came around, so seem stuck in the 70s with their musical tastes. why grape juice, one wonders.. possibly because in the 80s and 90s they used to get it in one of those tiny but elite grocery stores that stocked imported goods, and grape juice was one of those flavours that the local producers didnt make, so the cost felt justified. inherit professionalism from their parents.
Defence/Clifton, the nouveu riche. often have some connection to the middle east. not stinking rich though cause its still cheaper to buy a house in Clifton/Defence than it is in KDA i think.
Shah Faisal Colony/Malir, the stagnating lower middle class. Individuals are sharp, but limited in their ambition. Place hasnt changed in decades, except come to embody everything it was so much more.
Nazimabad/North Nazimabad, up and coming middle class. You get a sense of energy there. Place where you can expect to find startups, freelancers and entrepreneurs, or atleast the homes of people with that profile.
Malir Cantt.. decent gentlemen, army background, somewhat insular since they spend most of their time in a compound somewhat isolated from the rest of the city.
Lalazar area (MT Kahn Road), Garden West/ Parsi Colony besides KDA are also areas where you can find "old money" living. Gulshan is more start up and a little affected. North Naziamabd and Nazimabad are poles apart despite people who are not quite familair with these areas think. Naziamabd is a sprinkiling of milldle and Upper Middle class esp Nazimabad number 4 which is one of teh ebst areas of Naziamabad. North Naziamabd is upper middle Class and some areas like Block F (where teh smallest lot is 1,000 sq yards) and some areas of Block B are pretty posh. Blocks 5 & 6 in FB area stand out from rest of FB area.
