People complaining about their boss

How do you deal with them what kind of advice is good advice in these situations?
Do you say I don’t know what to tell you? You ignore their rant and just stay professional and keep conversation strictly business? Contact HR and let them know there is a problem in certain department?
Ask these guys fo contact HR?
Recently I had to hear rants by a few senior level folks , I just heard their rants and kept conversation strictly business. When they asked for advice I said I do not know what to say. I also said that if I did not like a job for whatever reason I found a new one.
I think in situations where you are not happy with your boss you should shut up , put up or get out. Is there a fourth option?

Re: People complaining about their boss

i tell them work under a woman like me and you won't have a problem...ever!

the ONLY boss i've ever worked under [as a supervisor when i was doing my Master's and PhD.] is a woman and we have great relationship...she like my God Mother. she has helped me from Day 1 and up till now and i hope that it will continue...iA. :)

one warning though:

please avoid a Desi woman as your boss...even a Desi man for that matter...if it is even remotely possible. :)

Re: People complaining about their boss

Mirch, the strategy you mentioned is something one has to follow in most cases. But if you have worked for a long time in a company and have a say in things. Then you should advise them to reach out to their HR in confidence. So that if a chunk of people have the same issue, that issue can build up enough support by the HR to be able to deal with the problem.

I remember in one of the companies I worked for, we had four different exit interviews in 6 months time frame from members within the same team. If those members had not resigned and informed us of their issues much ahead of time, we would have been able to take rectifying actions. It turned out that the manager in that department had serious issues and he was eventually asked to go. But had the others not resigned they would still be in their roles under a new manager.

So its important one lets the HR know what is going on, particularly if they have proof as well. Its important to back one's claims with solid material. That is what HR is there for, to ensure these soft issues can be solved before they start costing the company in any way or form. People leaving the company is a cost that a company incurs.
