Penalties ...

… they just seem so unfair. Each player that gets up there carries the hopes of a nation. It’s too much pressure.

Waddle, Southgate, that bloke whose surname begins with B and now Vassell have to face the anguish of missing the penalty that has kicked their country out of the tournament. It’s way too much pressure.

No penalty can top Roberto Baggio's miss in WC final against Brazil. It was way way over the top. He even made some bucks out of it by making an ad saying how he has learnt bla bla. Maybe Beckham should do it too after a month or so.

Y'know I really feel sorry for Vassell.. I mean I was rooting against him during the game, but seeing him after that missed kick was just depressing and maddenning. He wasn't the one that lost it for England in kicks.. his was just as good as all the others but the keeper finally got lucky on him. Beckham was the one that lost it there, his kick was just ****, soft spot or no. But really it was their regulation game that lost it for them.. pathetic and lazy.

I agree with you.

Penalties are the most unfair way to decide a match. But then: Is there any other way?

With a poor goal keeper like James, it was a lost cause to start with. Like Umar said the deadlock has to be broken somehow, is there any better way.

No there isn't any better way to decide the outcome of a match. As far as I am concerned it adds drama to a match. It can be cruel to go out like that if you've been the better team but that was hardly the case yesterday.

Sadi, just admit England are just a bunch of chokers :stuck_out_tongue:

A true leader would have buried the penalty. What a leader Beckham is!! His last 3 pressure penalties have all hopelessly been missed :smack: And he is considered their best player :rotfl:

he shud learn from Zidane :stuck_out_tongue:

Beckham has recently been found wanting when the chips are down for England. By missing the first penalty yesterday he put England under a lot of pressure.

Real Madrid will dump Beckham this season. I think the bubble has burst for Beckham. He's a good player but that's all he is....vastly over-rated.

^same goes for the ‘new Pele’ :hehe:

I think Ruud has a good chance now to become the deserved top scorer of this tournament :k:
another plus point for Holland compared to England :k:

One of the reasons England is out is David James. I will paste here what i said in other thread, it belongs here.

Number one rule in goal keeping while defending penalties that you must not be back on your heals rather on your toes mostly. Whoever saw the penalties can vouch that James was standing with his heals on the ground in ALL penalties giving him little time to react.

You could tell from his face that he is panicky whereas Ricardo was cool and calm. James' positioning against Zidane free kick was awful. Koi bhi hota score ker leta. I am sure England can do better than James.

Ok Rooney might not be the new Pele but he’s a damn sight more talented than the robotic Beckham. You are out of order dissing him Nes. It’s lucky for you we didn’t get through to the semis we would have crushed Holland just like in Euro2000 - with Rooney scoring twice :snooty:

I don't believe Beckham would have got where he is if it wasn't for his looks or his missus' legs. He's a very average player.

I think boy wonder Rooney is gonna go down the same hole Owen did. It's unfair to big them up so much cuz eventually they're gonna have to fall back down.

Anyway, back to penalties - yes I agree they bring a little excitement to the game, but they're hardly an adequate way of measuring footballing talent.

If worst comes to worst and penalties HAVE to be taken, then the whole team should be made to take one. Like this, chances are that more than one player will be held accountable for the loss.

Either way, they’re dead unfair (and I'm not just saying that cuz I'm an England fan!)

It makes great TV, and can even make the most boring of matches exciting.

What better ways are there, go back to tossing a coin?

as seen on Discovery
