Pemra and Aaj TV

Think “Responsible”

Dear Talat (Aaj TV)

You are a seasoned journalist, and most of the time I do enjoy your programs, but today seeing you on TV with a black band looked as though you were acting in a drama, with all the right props and attributes. Let news be news and not a sensationalized drama.

Secondly the question’s you asked at the end of the program were totally ridiculous and had absolutely nothing to do with the “show-cause” notice that was served to Aaj channel. The questions were so preposterous that I thought you were going to ask the following question too.

“Do you think that the show-cause notice served to Aaj Tv by pemra will help in reducing the prices of onions and tomatoes?”

Such questions were un-called for, coming from a person of your stature.

Now coming to the ultimate question did Aaj TV step out of line in understanding the responsibility that comes with the word “Free-Media”?.

Well! the following is what I think about aaj TV, when they covered the first hearing of the “CJS” issue. (It was the same day that Geo office got attacked).

Aaj TV in its live telethon tried their utmost to destabilize the country, inculcate a false sense of insecurity in every Pakistanis heart, flare the whole “CJS” issue in a political way, show that the very police who provide us with security are in fact enemy’s of the state who can be beaten up by irregulars, enticing people to come out on streets and challenge the writ of the government, showing people up-to-date information where the mobs can be formed and where the police lines are weak.

Don’t get me wrong, every one has his bias, and I don’t hold that against you, But running live telethons which are not in national interest are totally unacceptable. Understanding that Pakistan is mostly an uneducated country and such coverage would entice the people into violence without fully understanding the cause.

To make things a bit more comprehendible I will give you an example. Tomorrow if India attacks Pakistan and Pakistan’s line of defense is weak at a certain point, just to get the truth out will you air the information about Pakistan’s weakening defense locations? No you will not.

Re: Pemra and Aaj TV

Good write-up underthecross! :k:

I hope you’ve already sent it to Talat. And even Hamid Mir with slight alterations.

Even today Talat had Imran, one govt minister and shah Mehmood Qureshi, and kept taking calls all of which conveniently praised the guests and the opposition, hailed AajTV and Talat and spat venom against the govt while the opposition duo (along with the very professional journalist Talat) kept mocking the govt. One caller from KSA said he thought Imran wasnt a good person and very casually his call was dropped half way;
And I kept wondering if there’s ever going to be an end to our national irresponsibility and talent to never learn any lessons?
Today there is such magnified opposition and bitterness for the govt, fine lets accept it, what then? who do we look upto? does anyone have a plan (or lack of it) any different from 1988, 1991, 1993, 1996…!? I’m sure no one does.
Do we want the same faces that we see on tv everyday mocking the govt to take charge from the govt? Would some one like Shah Mehmood Qureshi (or for that matter khwaja saad rafiq, aitezaz, bb, ns, qazi, ch nisar ali, and so on) who smiles and mocks the govt when recently grown journalists of less than 5 yrs fame ridicule the govt as if he and his PPP which has had two chances had achieved Utopian perfection, or would ever have any sincere plans to achieve any such thing for Pakistan and its people. Or, a cricketer turned social worker upon retirement, that too due to his fan following and elite mingling, turned politician, who has no plan whatsoever regarding any core issue other than getting rid of the current govt and who has definitely never thought what he’d do the morning after, take the torch from this govt and actually get it anywhere!?
And the bigger question is, has the public ever thought about this with emotions under control? it’s the same emotional misguidance which wanted Ayub against Fatima Jinnah, followed Bhutto against a clearly winning Mujeeb, Followed BB against Nawaz and Nawaz gainst BB and now BB-Nawaz-Qazi-Fazl-Imran-and-what-not against Musharraf without any plans for Pakistan.
And what makes it worse is that the media is an additional party to the misery of the state. It used to be the public, govt and opposition, today it’s the govt, opposition, media and judiciary, each fighting its own battle for different goals while riding shoulders where available and feasible. What becomes of Pakistan, is nobody’s plan. It has never been an agenda.

Re: Pemra and Aaj TV

The followers of great Caesar who brow beat their chest and claim the high moral ground of bestowing upon the hapless *awaam *of this country the great miracle of electronic media, must realize that if these threats of closure continue and are acted upon, then if today it is AAJ, tomorrow it will be Geo, then ARY, Indus and before u can spell censorship, backwards, we will have come a full circle ending at PTV. This is ridiculous.

I'll write Talat tomorrow.

Re: Pemra and Aaj TV

SHC has already declared the notice null and void and issued notices to ghalat biyani and his minions. This too is going to boomer rang on the govt. I cant believe there is actually support for this. maybe we **deserve **to watch ptv, after all.

Re: Pemra and Aaj TV

Do You now Harris, Its not because I was in the air force 8 years ago, its just that when I see Musharraf talking, I believe him!! I know the sincerity in his eyes, and I believe my instincts!!!!!!

Re: Pemra and Aaj TV

yup I agree to a limited extent, but I dont stereotype, so I dont call all channels bad but I think now GEO has understood the meaning and responsibilities of "Free Media".

PS: Dont try to replace Cesar(Any) with Nero, You know what happened if you are a history student.

Re: Pemra and Aaj TV

Sindh High Court has declared the notice Null, obviosly, SHC has not understood teh meaning and responsibility of Free Media.

Re: Pemra and Aaj TV

EXACTLY my friend. If anyone is competent in Pakistan to write testimonials about the freedom of electronic media, it is Geo. I agree 210%.

Pemra’s notice suspended

By Our Staff Reporter
KARACHI, April 25: The Sindh High Court suspended on Wednesday a notice issued to a satellite television channel by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority to show cause why its licence should not be cancelled for airing news and views in contravention of the Supreme Judicial Council advisory.

The impugned notice, issued by Pemra on April 23, said the ‘Aaj’ channel had violated the code of conduct formulated for the electronic media under the Pemra rules. It alleged that the channel had failed to furnish to the authority a no-objection certificate from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, subject to which Pemra had granted it temporary uplinking permit to enable it to transmit its programmes.

The channel moved a petition through Advocates Rasheed A. Razvi, Anwar Mansoor Khan, Mushtaq Memon, Abdid S. Zuberi and Umar Lakhani saying that the notice was repugnant to Article 19 of the Constitution ensuring the freedom of expression and the provisions of Pemra Ordinance and rules framed under it.

A notice under the rules could be issued after consultation with a ‘complaints council’ required to be set up under the Pemra Ordinance and rules of 2002 within 200 days. There was no indication in the notice that the council was consulted. The rules provided for a 15-day notice while the impugned letter gave the channel only three days to submit an explanation, the counsel argued.

Admitting the petition, a division bench comprising Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Mrs Qaiser Iqbal issued notices to the respondent authority and the parent ministry for May 16. The impugned notice was suspended in the meanwhile.

Re: Pemra and Aaj TV

Now I think its govt’s turn to ***understand ***the meaning and responsibilites of “Free Media”. Issuing NOC’s in one day. Look how efficient we are. Dont we love mucchi and his boys.
**NoC issued for Aaj TV: govt

**
ISLAMABAD, April 25: Responding to a request by the management of Aaj TV for grant of a no-objection certificate for temporary uplinking facility, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Wednesday issued the certificate to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority for ‘further necessary action’.

A spokesman of the ministry said in a statement that taking notice of media reports regarding non-issuance of NoC for the purpose, it had informed the management of Aaj TV that no request had been received from them in this regard and that action could not be taken in the absence of an application for the purpose.

In response, the management of Aaj TV faxed a request to the ministry on Wednesday requesting grant of NoC for temporary uplinking facility.

Responding to the request, the ministry immediately issued an NoC to Pemra.—APP
