a true mumin is one who sincerely believes that no-one except Allah can bring good or bad to you, it is only through the will of Allah.

If a person is an Islamic scholar , yes he can give advice and so forth. Whether you use the term peer, or molvi or whatnot. He is in my eyes somebody who is very close to Allah, a very religious person with a lot of knowledge about Islam.

arent peer them guys who people go to if they have a problem (as you often see in pakistani dramas) and they say something like o i’ll read something in this water and blow in it and if you give it to the person who has the problem they will get better?

^ There are a lot of stereotypes. A learned scholar or 'peer' would know many duas. Therefore he could give advice or point them out to people. There are many many cures mentioned in the Quran for certain health issues, a peer is somebody who would know about them. He is not a miracle worker, but simply somebody who knows more than some other people.

yes i agree with the learned scholars and those who base their cures and duas from the sunnah dn quran but when someone says peers i just have this image of them just doing dodgy stuff, actually i think im gonna ask my teacher about this.

Really MQ. Allah has stated in Quran that I am close to you than your “shah rag”. Peers and Taweez are jihalat and waste of time.

And what was wrong in what I said? There are people out there who have more Islamic knowledge than maybe you or myself. You disagree?
Is that not why we learn from molvies, sheikhs etc? When we have questions, we ask somebody who knows more than us - at times - perhaps?
btw I do not mean the peers that you see a lot of times in pakistan - Im talking about them as people who have a lot of Islamic knowledge.

Yes I do mean Alim. I do not believe in those guys dressed in green handing out papers for people and telling them their cancer will go away.
I meant learned scholars. I guess they can go by different names.

I personally find it
offensive that people can even say that they can do such things...granted they give people a feeling of hope and the sense that there is something out there which is bigger and stronger than the individual concerned and can help with their crisis....
but still i dont think of it as a good thing.

Muslim_queen…by peer I mean those that hand out the magic charms etc…I think you have a confusion between what is an alim/scholar and what is a peer.
Kaleem …I agree with you too. Ur right…Allah does say that if you want something you ask Him …he doesnt say u ask the peer…and anyways…these peer come into the category of associating partners with Allah…which is shirk…which is the biggest sin…which will never be forgiven…which also takes out of the fold of Islam.
I remember when at college…I was in chemistry lesson…and got into a heated debate about Peers with my friends (some of who were shia too)…anyway, this other girl who was the cleverest in the whole class…came to us and asked what we are talking about. I told her about Peers…and then I mentioned one specific peer sahib in my city who was the biggest fraud I have ever seen…he takes money off people for duas 
anyway, and this man also has these majlisis where they put a chair in the middle of a circle…and recite some stuff and then they say “the Prophet will come to this gathering” 
so after I finished talking to this girl about this specific peer…she says to me “do you know you have just been talking about my grandfather?” I was like

TAweez is just used as a medicine by some ulema...it is not encouraged though....and having faith in the effectivness of taweez itself rather then will of ALLAH subhanawataalah is totaly haram-kuffar...
Peer is a persian word meaning buzurg-----peer actualy is a person who specialise in the cure of spiritual diseases ( roohani bimarian) of common people...some of the known peers( or buzurgs) known to you were peer ghazali ( imam ghazali) peer ibn temian ( imam ibn e temiah) peer hassan basri ( hadrat hassan basri )
JAli peers are those who give taweez, take money, do not follow shariah ....
