Peer pressure

I can only talk of desis as I’m one and because we do mainly associate with other desis. But why is it that we succumb to peer pressure so easily…I know so many folks who buy huge properties, then all this furniture and stuff, send their kids to expensive private schools, etc…all because of the pressures of the social circle they are a part of. Is there really a need to destroy your sleep and peace of mind just to appear good in front of the same families you sit with every Friday night and have the same biryani even though we all know that a single income home cannot afford the luxuries we are bathing in? Is credit card debt not as haunting as your social circle’s pressure?

So much fakeness.

Re: Peer pressure

I know desis do more show off. and i also know examples where one family bought a very good house and then within few month they lost it.

Re: Peer pressure

There's a lot of this happening these days.

Re: Peer pressure

now problem is that why we take it so personal.

earning money is all about eligibility of a person. more you eligible, more you earn.

so its mean, second view is completely ignored and that make us uncomfortable.

Re: Peer pressure

Yep. It can cause soooo many issues.

Where to live, what to buy/wear/drive, where to spend vacation, and where to send children for education..etc…all part of competing with others or showing off (neecha dikhaana). :smack:

I think usually the peer pressure is not such a problem for those who still can afford. Hence peer pressure is there but no financial issues for higher/equal class families.

Those, who make average living but mingle with above average income ‘peers’, (specially if both at some point were on equal level) may lose their sleep.

Re: Peer pressure

That's what I'm trying to say..if you can afford it well and good, but you see so many families living way beyond their means just in order to fit in to their social circle.

Re: Peer pressure

agree.

Re: Peer pressure

oh..

Re: Peer pressure

The worst thing is, the one who doesn’t succumb to this pressure, is looked down upon by others. And the ‘others’ are a majority… its just sad :hinna:

Re: Peer pressure

Well then they pay the 'price' for it (pun intended). .....by losing sleep, and more probems like acidity, heart problems etc. on top of getting financially burdened. :(

Re: Peer pressure

I've also noticed parents enrolling their kids in more and more extracurricular activities due to this peer pressure. They end up overwhelming their kids.

Re: Peer pressure

True, noticed it a lot here.

Re: Peer pressure

dont u think this social circle pressure is something we r too responsible for it… social circle pressure comes out of a society… society is formed by individuals, by “US”… so where this pressure is coming from… we r the ones who creates this pressure thingy …:hinna:…

@ bold…:k:…

Re: Peer pressure

exactly…we all are responsible for keeping these ‘expectations’ alive…and if we don’t take steps to correct this…we are the ones responsibles…its all so easy to blame the ‘society’ as if its some separate entity which is formed by Martians…

and then people go and preach and go about calling you ‘generalizing’ and ‘judging’ if you point out something like this…

Re: Peer pressure

i never took any peer pressure what so ever neither my parents took it.

yeah showing off is very common in our society just coz they dont want to appear any less infront of others.

Re: Peer pressure

Everything has its goods and bads. Why is so that every-time we talk about peer pressure, we always see the -ive aspect of it. Peer pressure sometimes works wonders.
