I think the pedestrian (zebra) crossing is more life threatening comparing to other crossings i.e., over bridge, with signals etc. See in the below image where road A and B suppose a one-way direction road. If a vehicle stop on road A, the vehicle coming on road B will be unable to see whether a person is about to cross the road or not, so it is more life threatening. As per my driving experience, I came twice a time to this situation where a car just stopped at road A and I was unable to see the pedestrian while driving on road B.
So I think it is a unnecessary facility if without any signals, given for the purpose to serve the pedestrians.
