if a convicted peadophile (on the sex offenders register) is released from prison and is moved to your area, how would you feel about that?
I personally would not want that. There have been cases of peadophiles being released from prison and ‘rehabilitated’ only to strike again. Some have even been caught loitering around local schools.
so my question to you is, how would you feel about one moving to your area? Would you do anything about it?
I wouldn't want it as well. But all we could do is, try our best to avoid any contact between our kids and him or her. (Yes, there are female peadophiles as well.)
After all the person has to live somewhere and you can't force him/her to move anywhere else. There'd be kids in any other area too.

Well certainly no one wants to live next door to a psycho sex maniac or a paedophile. But what if He/She has really come back to sanity, or He/She has rehibiliated and turned into a new leaf? If we cant encourage them in anysense then we should not discourage them from their new life style.
Yes keeping kids indoor is not a good idea. But what a council can do is to keep a check on these "convicts" within its locality. What good is a Council and for what we are paying Council Tax for??

I saw a film once where they tagged inmates of a prison so they could see where they were at all times.. This could be useful in the worst cases of paedophilia. Other than that.. castrate them -> they deserve it.

I don't know as much as I would like to know about this subject. Several questions come to mind when I think about it. For example, is this a genetic condition? Can it be treated with drugs? These answers are necessary before deciding whether or not the offender "deserves" to be castrated.
I would also like to know how the parents in our membership feel about this subject. I know that I would be very concerned about an ex-offender moving into my neighbourhood....but would I do something about it or would I be lenient and think of his/her rights as a rehabilitated person? I don't think I can truly understand the emotions until and unless I have a child of my own that is at risk.
Sex offenders can range from those that deal with Child Porn (Gary Glitter) to those that rape children.
If a person has been convicted of looking at child porn then maybe they can have a place somewhere in the general population, but consider a repeat child rapist, you don't think they deserve to be castrated? How would one of them moving into your neighbourhood affect you?
We have young children in the house.. it concerns me greatly.

This is a scary topic for many people. It also seems that ahuge number of children have been sexually abused and it marks tehm for life.
Sex offenders have always been around. Unfortunately the most common cases involve relatives and often don't come to light.
The only we can protect our children from Paedophiles of all types is to teach them how to behave, and protect them wisely.
My children often object to mamma taking them everywhere and wanting to know what is going on all the time. They get angry sometimes. But then we hear occasional stories on the news and they understand. I always tell them that they will get more freedom as they get older and are able to make decisions on their own.
It's also important to tell children clearly that if there is something going on that makes them uncomfortable that they can come to you and you will be on their side.

Muzna, there are biological and maybe even genetical reasons for almost everything. I personally do not think that is a valid defense for this behavior. Each and every one of us in this world is "naturally challenged". We all have some wierd tendencies and habits, inherent in our genes. Some are fighting against obesity, some against anger, some against other diseases; which also seem to be genetical.
So unless we believe in complete pre-destiny, and total lack of personal free-will, we can not justify such actions with genetics.
I sincerely doubt that the dominnat influence in making a person a criminal, pedophile, abuser, etc etc. is in any way genetic.
Excellent studies of such people have been done by pscycologists, psychotherapists etc, and almost in every case it has been clearly demonstrated that there was something wrong with that person's relationships during childhood. Almost alwayus with those people who that child was wholly dependent on for food and care. Often there is a story of abuse - physical or psychological- really horrible things have come out - and so they play themselves out in the condition where the adult who was abused as a child can take it out on another person.
I am never tired of citing Alice Miller. Her studies on some well known disturbed personalities are famous, especially her analysis of Adolf Hitler, but she has done a number of other studies on famous obviously mentally distorted people. And she has shown that there is always a cause.
I dont kknow if you guys heard of Magens Law, its meant to inform residents of an area if a sex offender is going to live near by....the law is there to protect but its hardly implemented, which is very bad but as shirin has said

on the same note, two or three days back threr was a news report on our local news network of a study done at John Hopkins which said that
42 % of all the victems, were raped by thier Family members
37 % by the people who knew htem
21 % By Strangers
so you can calculate, we are talking about the 21 % for which there are laws ...but what about the rest...
Pedophiles should be locked up in jail for a long long time. When (and if) they are out they should not be subjected to harassment as they did their time. Being a parent of young kids, I have always tried to guide them of the dangers of unfortunate scenes of our society, and one can only hope that they are safe from the bad and grow up to be decent and civil human beings. Shirin is right and I have also seen studies where there is a positive correlation between a pedophile and his/her childhood, but it is not always the case. Sometimes, the monsters just commit the acts without any reason or logic. Sickness knows no boundaries.
As a den leader of the young cubscouts, I had to go through a very intensive course on explaining 6 to 10 year olds on how to protect themselves from pedophiles. The most important lesson one can impart on their kids is to have them be honest/open with you all the time regardless of what happened. It is that kind of relationship that protects our kids from becoming victims/aggressors in their adult lives.
