PCB to conduct dope test before Twenty 20 World cup / Shoaib and Asif Cleared!

Pakistan to conduct dope tests on Twenty20 players

KARACHI (Reuters) - Pakistan’s Cricket Board (PCB) will conduct out-of-competition dope tests on the 30 players they have named in their preliminary squad for the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa in September.

A senior board official said on Saturday the dope tests would be conducted soon as part of Pakistan’s zero tolerance policy against drugs in sports.

Pakistan faced an embarrassing drugs scandal last year when their fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif failed out-of-competition tests before the Champions Trophy in India in October.

The two, who tested positive for nandrolone, were initially banned but were later exonerated of all charges and had their bans lifted by an appeals panel.

“We have decided to have dope tests on all 30 of our players in the preliminary squad because we just want to avoid any more incidents and also because we remain committed to the International Cricket Council (ICC) strict anti-doping policy in the sport,” Zakir Khan, director of cricket operations told Reuters.

Both Shoaib and Asif have been included in the Twenty20 preliminary squad.

PCB dope testing before world Twenty20 meet

The Pakistan board has decided to carry out dope tests on the 30 players in the provisional Twenty20 World Championship squad before the final 15-man side is announced next month.

Nasim Ashraf, the PCB chairman, has instructed the board officials to get the tests carried out as soon as possible so that the results are received from a laboratory in Malaysia before the final squad is picked on August 10. The tournament takes place in September.

“We will begin dope testing on the players as soon as possible,” said Ahsan Malik, PCB’s Communications Director. “It will take up to ten days to get the results of the tests, which is why the players’ urine samples will be obtained over the next few days.”

Malik said that the board may take samples from some players in Lahore and the others in Karachi. Most of the players on Pakistan’s provisional squad are currently in Lahore but will move to Karachi later this week for the final phase of training before leaving for South Africa.

Malik said he was confident all players would pass the tests but the board wants to be certain before announcing the final squad. He said it was the board’s policy to carry out internal dope tests ahead of major ICC events, a practice that would be continued.

^ Yes.

If any one is found positive than they may get a 'fake injury'.

Re: PCB to conduct dope test before Twenty 20 World cup

The Pakistan Cricket Board completed its out-of-competition dope tests on 26 leading players, including Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif, almost a week before naming the final 15-man squad for September’s Twenty20 World Championship.

Sohail Salim, the PCB’s medical officer, said urine samples had been collected from all players featuring in the Karachi-leg of the training camp. The samples will be sent to a WADA-accredited laboratory in Malaysia.

“All the samples have been collected and we hope to get the results of the tests in about a week’s time,” Salim told the News.

Four players from the probables haven’t yet given samples as they are currently playing county cricket in England, though Salim said a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) representative will collect their samples on behalf of the board soon.

Results of the tests will be available with the board before the national selectors name the final squad on August 6, thus avoiding the situation that arose during the Champions Trophy last year when Shoaib and Asif were included in the squad only to pull out a day before the first match because their positive results came late. This is the third time that the board has opted for out-of-competition dope tests on the country’s leading players in less than a year.

The tests weren’t without controversy as it emerged later that the board may not have adhered strictly to WADA regulations during its testing, despite claims that its policy was now fully WADA-compliant.

Doubts were raised in a radio report because samples from some of the players were taken on Monday evening while others were asked to be available for the procedure on Tuesday. The WADA code says that an athlete must present himself for testing within one hour after being notified in writing.

The code reads: “The players have a maximum of one hour to present themselves at the Doping Control Room for testing. During this time, they will be free to attend any post-match commitments, such as a presentation or press conference, but they will always be accompanied (albeit discreetly) by Sampling Officers, including inside the dressing rooms. All Team Managers and the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit are aware of these protocols.”

Dr. Danish Zaheer, a WADA accredited officer told Voice of America that if the one-hour notice protocol has been done away with, WADA can challenge the collection of players’ samples.

**Both Shoaib and Asif cleared

** Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif, the two Pakistan bowlers who returned positive dope tests last year, have cleared the latest tests held at the fitness and training camp in Karachi earlier this week.

“Akhtar and Asif are among 26 players who have cleared these tests for which we asked urgent reports from the World Anti-Doping Agency [WADA] accredited laboratory in Malaysia,” Ahsan Malik, the Pakistan board’s director of communications, told AFP.

The PCB had ordered dope tests for all camp attendees and had decided to hold back naming the squad for the inaugural Twenty20 World Championship until results were received. Both Shoaib and Asif were the focus of attention as they tested positive for the banned steroid nandrolone and were handed bans last year which were overturned later.

Malik said the PCB had expected all tests to be negative in accordance with its zero tolerance policy on doping. He also said that three players - Younis Khan, Danish Kaneria and Yasir Arafat currently involved in county cricket - were tested in England and the samples were sent to the same WADA-accredited laboratory as the rest of the squad.

The third and final fitness and training camp with special emphasis on the forthcoming Twenty20 World Championship concludes on Monday with the squad announcement expected next week as well.
