PCB shelve plans to launch sports channel

KARACHI: A proposed sports channel that was to be owned by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has fallen victim to the ongoing turmoil that has engulfed national cricket.
A PCB official told this correspondent that the PCB has shelved plans to launch a sports channel as the Board new management wanted to focus on resolving more important cricketing issues.
The PCB, under Shaharyar M Khan as chairman, had planned to launch a full-fledged sports channel with the collaboration of Pakistan Television (PTV).
However, the Board’s new chief Dr Nasim Ashraf has decided not to go ahead with the plans because he believes PCB has more important issues to resolve.
Pakistan cricket has been hit hard by a number of controversies since The Oval Test fiasco in August and is currently in the process to deal with a doping scandal involving the national team’s top pacers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif.
“The Board’s new management thinks that it is not in the position to set up its own sports channel,” said the official. “It may opt to take up the project once the timing is better,” he added.
