PCB Appoints New Selection Committee

Re: PCB Appoints New Selection Committee

.. OK, hopefully you guys are done reminiscing. Now lets get back to Selection Committee and talk about the future.

I don't really recall Shafqat Rana and what are his credentials. Frankly I don't recall this Salahuddin character as well. Although all these names are familiar and my guess is these types of folks stick with various PCB committees all the time. I doubt if we will get much fresh thinking with this group either.

At the same time it probably does not matter so much. The job (now a 'job' in real sense, since these guys are now paid a salary) of the selection committee is to go around the domestic cricket circuit and keep identifying new cricketers who show good potential. Since this committee is responsible for both the 'A' team and national team, so expectation should be that potential players should first be routed through the 'A' team, and once they have shown their mettle, then they should get into the national team. I am not sure how much exposure our 'A' team gets anyway . They should start sending them to international tours etc.

Re: the new policy that for home tours, selection committee, and not the captain/coach will select the playing XI, I think its a crappy and impractical decision. Will the selection committee then also take responsibility for poor performance? I doubt it. These old ghoray will place the blame on the captain and players. Therefore it makes sense that the captain (with the help of coach and senior players) make the game strategy including batting order, bowling options, fielding strengths - and thus the captain is responsible for picking the final playing XI and ultimately takes responsibility for the results. Hopefully this new *charya *policy will give way to a more practical approach in the months to come.

Both Salahuddin ‘Sallu’

and Shafqat Rana
http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/pakistan/content/player/42637.html

have been selectors before but they were average players at best (played 5 tests)

I think it’s foolish that the selection committee should have a major say in the selection of the playing XI for home games. That would be disastrous.

The selection committee’s job is to give the final 15 or 16 players to the captain and coach (in consultation with both of them)

Then even on foreign tours the final playing XI should be decided by the captain, vice-captain and coach but apparently there wil be 4 people involved incl. the tour manager who’s job as I understand is to ensure discipline within the squad and deal with administrative stuff incl. dealing with the press/media.

As they say in English ‘Too many cooks spoil the broth!’ and quite rightly so.

I don’t know much about Shafqat but Sallu (from his appearances on TV cricket shows) seems like a really decent guy and has some experience of doing it in the past. So good luck to them both.

Re: PCB Appoints New Selection Committee

I would have like to see 5 member selection committee (if possible) if they can get Intikhab Alam (trust me that guy has the eye to spot talent) and if somehow they can get Saeed Ahmad that would be great.

No compromise on discipline and fitness, vows Salahuddin

By Mohammad Yaqoob
LAHORE, April 18: The newly appointed chairman of the national selection committee, Salahuddin Ahmed, said he would prefer only those cricketers who feel proud to play for Pakistan and not with Pakistan.

In an interview with Dawn on Wedneday, Salahuddin said, “Playing for the country is a great honour and I believe only those players can deliver who have the will to serve the country.”

Salahuddin, a former Test cricketer who replaced Wasim Bari after Pakistan’s debacle in the ongoing World Cup, is the head of the first paid selection committee.

He pledged to work in a more professional manner. “As the board will be paying us, we have to deliver. I think as full time selectors we can do our job with commitment and in professional way.”

He said both members of the committee were selected on his recommendations.

“I preferred Shafqat (Rana) as he is a highly respectable figure and Saleem Jaffar because he is close to domestic cricket as he is the coach of Karachi Urban team.”

The new chief selector said his top priorities were to maintain discipline in the team, improve players’ fitness and find a good opening pair.

“There will be no compromise on discipline and fitness as I consider these two areas as the most important to build a formidable side.

“A large number of changes were the main reason for not finding a good opening pair after Aamir Sohail and Saeed Anwar,” Salahuddin, who has earned the big post for the second time, said.

When asked how he would combat with players’ power, the chief selector said it was the job of disciplinary committee or manager of the team.

“I think a strong manager should be appointed with the power to impose penalty on players on the spot and to check such incidents at domestic level, a strong disciplinary committee should be formed,” the new chief selector suggested.

Salahuddin, who is also a member of the World Cup’s Performance Evaluation Committee (PEC), said he had no idea that he would be offered the post when he joined the PEC.

** About his selection criteria, he clarified that there would be no room for players who knew little batting and little bowling. To get selected, the players should have either strong batting or strong bowling. They must be specialists of their fields.**

** “I am not against all-rounders, but I do not like ‘makeshift’ arrangements. A cricketer must and should be selected for his specialisation in one department and his additional qualities in other departments should be treated as secondary,” he explained.**

He said the selection committee would be completely independent though it would get the feedback and advice from the captain and coach.

Meanwhile, PCB chairman Dr Nasim Ashraf had a marathon meeting with Salahuddin.

‘Merit, fairness my main objectives’

KARACHI, April 18: Former Test pacer Saleem Jaffar said on Wednesday that his focus as member of the national selection committee will be merit, sincerity and honesty while picking the national squad.

“It’s a great honour as well as a challenge for me under the current crisis to pick almost a new-look team,” he said in an interview after he was named as a member of the first-ever paid selection committee, including ex-Test cricketer Salahuddin Ahmed (head) and Shafqat Rana, another former Test player, by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The 45-year-old Saleem said it was a tough task however added that he was looking forward to play his part in selecting the best possible team and to make it a winning combination.“Our players are far behind in mental toughness as compared to the other teams. This is the main factor in our poor performances,” he opined. “Our boys must learn to perform in pressure situations.”

“In the present scenario batting and spin bowling are our problem areas,” Saleem stated, promising, “Merit and fairness will be my main objectives.”
“We need good back-up from Pakistan A and under-19s for replacements in the senior side,” he noted. “Pakistan cricket is going through difficult times. It will be a transitory period.”

Commenting on lack of quality players in the domestic circuit, Saleem said the current players lack passion for the game, adding that they are more concerned about monetary gains which was main the cause of cricket’s decline in the country. —APP

Actually it was Bird who misjudged a catch (gave Imran caught behind) though Brid apologized for that, but damage was done.
