I’ve decided to upgrade some hardware again. This time i’m looking to get a Quad-Core supporting MB and a Quad Core CPU (Probably Q6600).
What kinda motherboard would you recommend. I’m interested in SLI since i’ll be using my current XFX 8600GT cards on the new board.
Thanks as always.
PS: Focus is overall performance, gaming would be a big plus.
This is what i have as of right now (minus the MB and CPU, which i’ll replace anyways)
OCZ 600Watt PSU
Kingston HyperX DDR2 2GIG (i forget the clock speed)-Upgrade possible. Please remember i’m using Vista and i’m not sure if it still has issue with 3+gig of ram.
Motherboard: XFX nForce 750i SLI Extreme CLICK HERE
CPU:::::::::::: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz 1066FSB (I know it’s not all that, but budget doesn’t allow for an extravagant CPU at the moment.) CLICK HERE
Graphics:::::: XFX GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 (Already have 2 of these, so i’ll stick with 'em)
PSU::::::::::: OCZ GameXStream 600Watt CLICK HERE (I could have gone higher, but i just got this a little while ago. I’ll stick with it for now)
RAM::::::::::: Kingston HyperX 2 GIG DDR2 PC6400 (Already have it, may add more if deemed necessary)
HDD::::::::::: WD 500GIG 7200RPM Sata (Already have it.)
So, what do you think?
What should i change? What would you (all) recommend?
I built one with Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (teggy same as yours) around 3/4 months ago and Its working quite well. I am running it with 4GB Kingston DDR2 (I guess its 6400 but don't remember). Working like a charm for development.
Thanks for run-down JL. Is 2 GB sufficient in your opinion? I don't plan on going 64-Bit anytime soon, i'll be running X86 Vista.
D6C, nice bro. How's the cooling on it? I've heard it's meant to be very efficient.
Well, i'lll probably be ordering the stuff on Monday, inshaAllah.
Will, update with the latest.
2gb memory is enough for 95% of the tasks (most games, web browsing, etc.) MS 32 bit systems don't recognize memory beyond 2GB. You can try messing with some ini files and get it to work but why bother?
64bit systems performance is amazing but there aren't many programs out there for that so I don't want to risk anything and give up some of the 32bit software I use.
AMD is cheaper, that is the main reason but also it runs cooler and I've never had any issue with AMDs so far. I've build 3 or 4 PCs and all were AMD based CPU but I am thinking I might need to jump to intel to see how it feels but I doubt you can tell unless you run some benchmark software.
Nice. You wouldn’t be interested in a slightly used P4 3.4 HT, would you? Just kidding.
Thanks for the input though man, it’ll def. help me decide on something in the coming days. I’ll post back with the finalized decision/purchase on the replacement hardware, and probably seek more advice if needed.
