Re: Paying rent to the parents
If I were your dad I would be happy that you are living with me and saving for your future. The time you will spend together is priceless. Who will he give that house to eventually anyways.
If there are privacy issues then I can understand....but leeching aspect, I'm afraid I don't.
Re: Paying rent to the parents
Mad_scientist sounds like the money issue has a big part in ur relation to ur parents. The stuff ur saying sounds very strange. Perhaps its because im not in the same situation. My parents arent wealthy. actually they dont live together. Its just me and my mom. I also bought my own appartment. My mum pays the rent on her appartment and I pay food, phone, cable, travel, clothes etc aswell as mortgage on my appartment. Even though I am financially stabile my mum dosnt want anything from me. Mostly I have to force her to go on vacation or buy new stuff for herself.
Re: Paying rent to the parents
I thought exactly the same in my younger years… it was a bit of a shock when I realised my parents weren’t joking when they were suggesting I should move out of the house. They started telling their friends I’d be moving into my own place soon and when they bought a new house to move in to, they were buying new furniture for everything except my room. They said they’d move my old stuff in and once I was gone do it up as a guest bedroom!
Re: Paying rent to the parents
LOL! Well put.
Re: Paying rent to the parents
Material favours and returns aside, ask yourself this:
Will you be there to walk your 85 year old parent to the bathroom, bathe them and help them take a dump, or will you hire a maid-servant to take care of that.
Things easier said than done. We think helping them out financially relieves us of all responsibility.
Re: Paying rent to the parents
If I am financially stable, I wouldn't want my kids to return any favours. Expecting financial returns from kids is just wrong. Providing for them is your responsibility until they make a life of their own.
very true...i would never put any type of expectation on my kids. this desi mentality that we've put so much effort towards our kids, and now they have to repay us by not having a life of their own..ahh..i don't agree with it.
i think i'd be happier in a old folks' home when i'm older, knowing that my kids are happy in each of their own homes, without my being a burden on any of them..
(i'd get to play bingo all day! imagine that :D)
Re: Paying rent to the parents
You knw i was kinda thinkin this a lil while ago..
There r some ppl who think because they give their parents money, supporting them financially, they are doing them favors and thus have a right to walk all over them.. :(
Re: Paying rent to the parents
There are parents who treat their kids like ****
Screw em!!
Re: Paying rent to the parents
MAddy, your parents sound like very intelligent and reasoned individuals
Re: Paying rent to the parents
My parents raised 3 kids and put them all through higher education. They've never asked for anything and no matter how much we insist on giving them money or buying things, we get yelled at. :D Inshallah, that will change because I really want to give my parents everything.
Re: Paying rent to the parents
He was doing you a favor. It's about providing us with opportunities for personal growth and self discovery. This is all part of growing up yo.
Re: Paying rent to the parents
Say this really fast 8-10 times: Pay Rent.
Coincidence?
Re: Paying rent to the parents
^ Yesh :p
Re: Paying rent to the parents
"I wanted THIS BMW but your school fees were THAT much, I wanted a house in THIS area, we could have gone on holiday to HERE every year, I wanted to do a cruise BUT ......"
They have made it clear that when the time comes we will have to return the favour by supporting them with whatever they need. The exact phrase was that the money they spent on us as kids is an investment in THEIR future.
Well maddy, i think all parents expect their children to do good for them for all they have done for them, but i think this is a rude comment to make. I have put my children in private school, but i have never thought about BMW or cruise etc coz this not important to me, what is important is my children. How can i enjoy BMW while denying my children good education.
Re: Paying rent to the parents
I think it's best for one to move out and become financially independent as quickly as possible. That way you are not a burden on your parents nor do you have to listen to any tannay later on.
I for one would never regard my children as some sort of retirement fund or investment. Whatever I do for them would strictly be for their OWN benefit. If they are happy and living a comfortable life, that's more than enough for me.
Re: Paying rent to the parents
i think they deserve alot more
but paying them looks like a kinda bargaining ( i think)
Re: Paying rent to the parents
Rush, I don't do it often that's the trouble, They are in Pakistan and I am in England and they still send me money. Basically they don't need anything from me. I don't know about you guys, but it kinda hurts me coz I should be taking care of them not vice versa.
Re: Paying rent to the parents
