With a title like My Idiot Brother and the casting of Paul Rudd](http://www.moviefone.com/celebrity/paul-rudd/2161029/main?icid=movsmartsearch), you might expect this to be another Judd Apatow or Adam McKay thingy with Will Ferrell or Seth Rogen playing the intellectually challenged title character while Rudd wears a suit and a straight face. But rather, according to The Hollywood Reporter, this project is actually an indie comedy from director **Jesse Peretz **(The Ex), and Rudd in fact has the role of “the idiot brother.” And by idiot, they don’t mean an arrested development man-boy type so much as an “idealist” guy who’s contrasted by three “ambitious” sisters. Fittingly, the script was co-written by Peretz’s sister, *Vanity Fair *contributing editor Evgenia Peretz.

Her partner on the screenplay was documentary filmmaker **David Schisgall **(Very Young Girls), and the film boasts a nice crop of big name indie producers, including Anthony Bregman](Anthony Bregman | Moviefone) (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) and Little Miss Sunshine’s Peter Saraf](Peter Saraf | Moviefone) and Marc Turtletaub](Marc Turtletaub | Moviefone). Bregman says the appeal lies in the fact that we all have idiot brothers (I have two brothers, neither of whom is an idiot – does that mean it’s me?). Of course, the real appeal here is Rudd, who we all want to see humorously dealing with an overbearing mother (please, Bregman, bring back your *Lovely & Amazing *matriarch, Brenda Blethyn) and three eclipsing sisters – hopefully one of them is played by Bregman reg Catherine Keener.
