Diana, Princess of Wales planned secretly to marry Hasnat Khan, the heart surgeon with whom she had a two-year relationship, her former butler Paul Burrell has told the inquest into her death.
The Princess described Mr Khan as her “soulmate” and “the man she loved more than any other”, Mr Burrell said, and revealed that the Princess had asked him “if it would be possible to arrange a private wedding” between the Princess, who was an Anglican, and Mr Khan, a Muslim.
Mr Burrell discussed the matter in 1996 with his own Catholic priest Father Anthony Parsons at the Carmelite Catholic Church in Kensington, West London.
But the Princess ended her relationship with Mr Khan in mid-July 1997 during an emotional meeting in Battersea Park, during which Mr Khan made it clear he was not prepared become a public figure.
Re: Paul Burrell: Diana planned private marriage to Hasnat Khan
I read this today. I had read about this back in the day too. Apparently Diana during one of her visits to Pakistan, actually visited Dr Khan's family too. My question is, people don't develop relationships with royal family just out of no where. When Dr Khan was gettring involved with Diana in the first instance, didn't he knew that she is a princess, mother of future king of UK and definitely a high profile public figure? May be he got involved initially just as a challenge thinking this thing ain't going no where, and then it became serious. A strong rumor was that while Dr Khan was very willing to marry her, his family put their foot down. May be they foresaw a Dodi Al-Fayed kinda ending for their son if he got too involved with the royal family. In any case, to me it seemed like a doomed affair from the get-go. Poor lady is already dead. May her soul rest in peace.

He's the only man in her life who has not sold a story of their love and has avoided the limelight, so it probably it is true that he was unwilling to become a public figure. Most of their relationship was actually conducted in secret.

Yes she did visit their family and met up with his cousins in Model Town Lahore. The family was not the ones to decide but it was his own decision.
