It is based purely on geographical division of earth.

Re: Patriotism & Nationalism
im personally not in favour of patriotism or nationalism. Its a way of seeing things in units. And with it comes an arbitrary set of ideologies and belief systems. But nature and natural human behaviour will always dominate when push comes to shove. A tornado or hurricane doesnt see a border check point, but we do. Its good in small doses but history has shown what happens when patriotism is taken to the extreme. Nationalism or patriotism is slowly being replaced by gloabalism
I know that had nothing to do with the topic btw…just wanted to get it out there
Re: Patriotism & Nationalism
I don’t know if
“It is based purely on geographical division of earth.” holds the true essence of patriotism.
or
***“an arbitrary set of ideologies and belief systems” ***
but i guess
“***Nationalism or patriotism is slowly being replaced by globalism” ***Might hold some ground… infact when u replace globalism with Individualism then that sounds closer to the norm these times.
It really depends on an individual as present. Most of us would love to see our national cricket team beat the heck outa all other nations, we would cheer and we would be livid depending upon the performance of our sports stars… that might ring like patriotic of sorts. But then almost all of us, regardless of our condition in pak, would really kill for an immigration to US or Canada or u know…places that are much more stable than ours. Heck even Somalia is more of a state than ours it seems. Now are u being un patriotic if u r dreaming of a life outa Pak?
And then there are who feel genuinely hurt when a disaster occurs, or something ominous happens to their land of ancestors, lets stick to Pak again for example…and u feel the need and desire to help however way u can… but then u are extremely disappointed… and hopeless in indefinite proportions when u face our government employs, the corrupt people of the land or the whole fiasco in general… do u feel your insides break away, torn down looking at the state of your ancestor’s land (or yours in this regard)?
For Me personally, the only connection I had was the military and the cricket team… both are in utmost dismal conditions. Military in particular…Am I patriotic enough to do something about anything… well, it seems I am not. So my patriotism is just limited to a few yap yaps across forums and a couple of of jabs to some political activists of PTI/N-league.
And do I hang a flag over my roof top on 14th of Aug… No.
Re: Patriotism & Nationalism
I agree and neither do birds. They have no citizenship either. They can fly across all countries. I think i am more of an internationalist and in a sense i can’t be a good patriot because i would want to think of welfare of people in all countries rather than just my own. True patriotism is when you show people from other countries through your actions what people of your country are like, what your culture/values are..you want the country/countries to do well and showcase their best to the world without feeling the need to tear down other countries/or feeling betrayal when someone of your country works elsewhere. You are happy at other people being patriotic for their land. You speak no ill or say bad to other countries/people of other countries because you know that reflects on you and your country.
This song is true patriotism. It is a story of an Afghan refugee in Kabul missing and yearning for his homeland while working abroad. No talk of putting down others/wars etc. I think real patriotism is also about criticising the land you are from to make it better. Not just compliments and being a blind follower. There is also a difference between nationalism vs jingoism.
Re: Patriotism & Nationalism
The song ghat comes to mind reading above last line
Aii mere pyare vatan
aii mere bichde chaman
tujhpe Dil kurban
tu hi Meri arzoo
tu hi Meri abroo
tu hai Meri jaan
Re: Patriotism & Nationalism
Tagore’s Kabli wala
Re: Patriotism & Nationalism
Yes. Lovely story.
Re: Patriotism & Nationalism
Never knew what abroo meant.
Re: Patriotism & Nationalism
its aab-roo = honor, izzat
Re: Patriotism & Nationalism
That makes the song even deeper and more enjoyable.
Re: Patriotism & Nationalism
I think it is most over-rated emotion but then people in India are emotional and our opinions are mostly passionate and personal ![]()
Re: Patriotism & Nationalism
Hope to watch the movie one day.
You know a patriotic song is deep when it crosses boundaries and touches heart of others.
Listen to this patriotic song by Jagan Nath Azad, a Pakistani Hindu. I can hardly understand most of the Urdu words without translation. but with translation it is beautiful. Makes you fall in love with the song and the country. Jagannad Azad loved his country of Pakistan but i don’t know his full story of whether he lived his life there. Never fails to bring a tear to my eye despite not being Pakistani. It was made in 1940s and allegedly broadcast on night of Independence
here is a translation
Tarana-e-Pakistan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was sweet that Jagan Nath’s grandchildren on youtube praised the Pakistani singer who sang the song for singing the song and keeping his memories alive.
Re: Patriotism & Nationalism
Nice meaning. Wouldn’t have a prayer without translation. Video don’t working.
Re: Patriotism & Nationalism
video is nice. try again. if not youtube “Azad ki dua.” I would have no hope without video either. You’d think id understand a bit more since i speak hindi lekin nahi mujhe samajh nahi aata.
Re: Patriotism & Nationalism
What the heck does last sentence mean. I speak Hindi too. Now u have me riled up. Let’s fight
Re: Patriotism & Nationalism
i meant since i have a hindi background. Obviously you’ve lived longer in india so your hindi is probably better. I really admire how many people in south take effort to learn other languages unlike people in north who don’t know tamil, telegu etc
Isko maha yudh nahi banana hai mujhe
apologies for any hurt sentiments.
