As India prepares to ward off threats from ballistic missiles, the US has offered to equip the Indian military with a combat-proven surface-to-air guided missile system designed to protect US troops from tactical ballistic and cruise missile strikes.
Acting in response to a request for proposal (RFP) floated by the Indian ministry of defence for medium range surface-to-air missiles, US defence contractor Raytheon made a sales pitch for the Patriot air defence system at the Farnborough international air show on Tuesday…
Only time they were tested in war was the first gulf war...they were only affective 50% of the time........and in some instances the patriot would go after the dummy objects falling away from the Iraqi missiles and not the warhead............
so you get a 50 50 chance for protection or total obliteration.....:(
^ ^ I think India wants PAC III system which is newer generation and far more accurate. Americans claim it to be so accurate that it doesnt even carry explosives with it, it destroys an threat by impact and punching hole in it.

its like hitting bullet with a bullet. It hasn't happened yet.
Biggest flop project in US history. Glad india wants to buy them.

Patriot 1 was somehow the failure but India is going for Patriot 3 which is offcourse much better because of given below reason.

"The fastest way to succeed is to double your failure rate." -- Thomas J. Watson
**India has another option of going for Arrow-2 (Israel system) defense system as India already operate "Green Pine" radars which has much better accuracy.
Contradicting claims by the United States Army, Israeli officials say that Patriot missiles deployed to defend Israel from attacks by Iraqi Scud missile attacks in the Persian Gulf war intercepted next to none of the Scuds.
LAst time I knew intercepting the route was called success.
In human term If i play soccer on friday and score a goal, and you come on next wed day follow/cross same path, that was called a "success"

plus iraq had far better missiles..
Iraqi Scuds were better!!!!!!!!.. This is a news... They always use to miss their tagert by Five Kilo meter or more...
Iraqi Scuds were like rocks, you just throw them at target blindly and anticipate that it will hit bulls eye'. Many scuds fired at Dhahran Airbase Saudi Arabia landed in open desert and in residential areas 5-10 KM away from the airbase.
Anyway PAC-3 is a very advanced form and US have definitely tested them. But there are chances of technical failures at any time, cause PAC-3 wont be tested on all kind of missiles/rockets and definitely not in all type of terrains.
India should've acquired the Russian S-300/S-400's - far more capable systems than this joke called the Patriot.
The fact is that these Patriots have only been tested on Scuds, UAV's, and airplanes simulating as missiles. What it should've been tested on are the newer missile platforms that are in enemy inventory, but that cannot happen as only the enemy possesses those newer platforms. You have to know the missile, its codes and flight path before you can develop a system to intercept it.
The fire & forget method (track via missile) used on the PAC-III is disadvantageous because it alerts the enemy aircrafts of incoming interceptors, hence the enemy can simply pull evasive maneuvres or turn off its radar, in which case the interceptor's guidance will be lost. If an enemy missile is not using a radar-based guidance system, the fire & forget method becomes useless, and the PAC-III has to resort to semi-active homing (datalinking with ground-based radars to engage enemy missile; if this is used against aircrafts, then the aircrafts can take out the radars using anti-radars weapons).
The Patriot system is very complex which also makes it difficult to achieve a high success rate. The newer PAC-III has only been successful in intercepting the short range Iraqi missiles (Al-Samoud), and has also mistakenly (and automatically) shot down many friednly aircrafts belonging to the coalition forces.
Most cruise missiles, including the Pakistani Babur, use terminal homing as guidance (no radio waves emitted), hence the fire & forget method of the PAC-III should already be forgotten.

I was in Riyadh during this period and the only segnificant sucess scud scored was when it hit the US army garrison in Dammam. Patriot could not intercept this dreadful scud.
It seemed that scuds at closer range were more acurate compare to long distance sling shot miss effects.
Good Luck India! Carrots mubarack ho :-)
y is india ****ting in its pants, and afraid from Pakistan ? i mean Pakistan doest even have to strike india, ( we cant any ways lol ) so why be afraid indians, live a little.
but besides that its not the missiles india should be concerned about. its the people.
