Patriarchal societies & Islam

This is an off-shoot from Suroor_Ca’s thread in this Forum (regarding “fatwas”).

i was wondering about this. Here’s my query - how have patriarchal societies undermined the genuine principles of Islam and how have patriarchal customs stood in the way of Muslim women fulfilling their religious obligations?

Are women really EQUAL in non-religious worlds? secular worlds? democratic?

yes Changez_like they are.. they have equal opportunities and they are not blocked from achieving their goals.. what they achieve and accomplish is a reflection of their efforts and inclinations.

Aren't all Abrahmic religions patriarchal?

Nadia

Ever read My Feudal Lord by Tehmina Durrani? It's a good book about the feudal system of our society.

Galaxy, i have heard heaps about that book but i am afraid i have not read it yet. Actually another good one might be, "Hoops of fire" - 50 years of writing by Pakistani women, assortment of their stories, since independence.

Sorry, guys, but this isn't about what rights women do or do not possess in secular countries. i am more interested about patriarchal societies (majority of current Muslim countries are patriarchal) and the effects of that upon (Muslim) women fulfilling their religious obligations.

Any thoughts on the above, anyone?
