Islam in that sense brought revolutionary changes in an extremely male dominated society, and provided extraordinary protection to women by defining definite rights for them while outlining a simpler, easier and more natural role for them in the fabric of everyday life.
Societal female equality however went downhill from there; too many factors to list in one place.. but predominantly because Islam spread so rapidly and had to adapt itself to so many different cultures; not all of whom adopted it in it’s entire pure form, thus creating a hybrid of a new religion with age old tribal values.
Much of what we see in terms of Women Rights in ‘Islamic’ societies around the world today is more aboriginal tradition, hiding behind misinterpreted religious laws.

Well Judaism is matrilineal but still patriarchal.
Some African tribes and a few asian and pacifical ones are matriarcal. I believe they are generally well functioning and peaceful groups. Yes PEACEFUL.
at least it seems that when women have the reins in hand they tend not to go to war. I suppose that's a sign of responsibility?

Look at the tribes you say are matriarchial.
Just as meaning of life is NOT just to exisist ,alive & survive ,HAVING PEACE AT ANY COST ,isnt meaning of a honourable respected &world power.Look at usa ,.it has gone to war ,the most no.of times ,yet is considered a peaceful nation & using war to maintain peace.Such force can be possible only in patriarchial society .Look at the basket case of the world ,according to Kissinger ,Bangladesh ,it has had 2 women p.m.in its short life of 30 yrs whereas u.s. never even had in the primary contesting president in over 200 yrs of the republic.

AAmir, I did not say "peace at any cost". But I do believe that there are a whole lot more options than most men are capable of seeing before resorting to arms and violence and women are a lot more resourceful in this regard.
