'Pati' represents 'ownership'!

I was listening to this Lady Kamla (interviewed by Amir Khan) about the reasons of domestic violence.

She came up with a very interesting point that word ‘Pati’ for husband in Hindi had a psyche behind its meaning. Like ‘crore-pati’ means owner / master of crore, pati consider himself master of wife. Master / owner of property always need to exercise authority to control the property and hence the violence.

How do you see this perception?

Do words for husband in other languages of sub-continent carry same meaning as we don’t see domestic violence limited to just Hindi speaking areas.

Re: 'Pati' represents 'ownership'!

spousal abuse [especially the wife] is an acquired behavioural problem rather than linguistic manifestation. violence begets violence. if a child sees his mother being abused by his father, he will most likely be a wife-abuser himself.

education is one way to stop this menace. also, the religious people must tell those abusers that it's totally against the religion to abuse wives and they will be held accountable to their deeds in front of Allah. lastly, the society as a whole must condemn those abusers rather than implicitly glorifying them.

Re: 'Pati' represents 'ownership'!

Umera Ahmed's 'Kankar'?

Re: 'Pati' represents 'ownership'!

i dunno about her...i don't watch Dramas. :(

Re: 'Pati' represents 'ownership'!

okay just think of other words for husband in Urdu / Hindi and check if they have same meaning of master / owner.

One I remember is 'Ghar-wala' which falls under same category. But fortunately they got 'Ghar-wali' as well.

Re: 'Pati' represents 'ownership'!

lol @ gharwaalaa and gharwaali...the thing is men make decisions about major issues, like when wife can go to maayeke (in normal times) while women make minor ones, like what to cook today! :D

how about zauja? ahliya etc?

Re: 'Pati' represents 'ownership'!

its more about terms used for 'husband'. I think 'Khawaind' also got master meaning. wo kehte hain 'Pati Parmeshwar' urf Majazi Khuda.

Well yes really well said, i too say this thibg husband n wife equality k sath treatment honi chahye no matter whose status is high, but equality should be in this relation, i also believe you are actually role model for your child, they will learn the relation from their parents so the bond between them should be strong and based on equality(respect eachother, this really matters )
