Hi i am speaking with a few pashtuns and i have found its common for them not to tell the bride until the day of her wedding that shes getting married…is there any cultural explanation as to why they do this?
It almost seems like a rumor.

May be they believe in 'Curiosity killed the cat'.
seems one off custom and not a regular practice.

Who told you that?. In our culture even ‘mangni’/engagement itself is big and eventful affair and there is some gap between mangni which we call ‘kozda’ in pashto , and wedding. Infact between gap of mangni and wedding, there is quite interaction between two families who are getting married, though the ones engaged cant see each other nor they can visit each other house.
