BOMBAY (Reuters) - Indian actress Parveen Babi, who played the siren in dozens of Bollywood films, has been found dead at her home, a police officer says.
Police broke into the Bombay suburbs apartment where she lived alone after neighbours said her door had not been opened for two days, deputy commissioner Amitav Gupta said on Saturday.

Gupta said the actress, who once featured on the cover of Time magazine as the face of the modern Indian woman, appeared to have died of natural causes. Her age was not immediately known.

Babi, famed for her unconventional western looks, starred in more than 50 Hindi films mostly in the 1970s and early 1980s.

She was cast in her first Hindi film while still a student at the Ahmedabad University, and was best known for her roles alongside Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan.

Babi came to represent the bohemian Indian woman on celluloid, unafraid to smoke or drink on camera, at a time when these were considered taboo.

Bollywood actress Parveen Babi was found dead in her Juhu residence in Mumbai on Saturday, police said.

Although the actress was ailing for sometime, the reason behind her death is still a mystery. But the police suspect that the death could be due to "medical overdose". She was reportedly suffering from schizophrenia and diabetes. The death came to light when the police opened her apartment door after neighbours informed that milk bottles and newspapers were not collected from the actress' doorstep for the past two days."We opened the door of her house with the help of a duplicate key and found her body," DCP Amitav Gupta said. The preliminary enquiry has ruled out any foul play, he said. Parveen Babi is perhaps the prettiest actress to have ever appeared in Bollywood cinema. She undeniably lit up and overpowered the screen with her presence. The fact that Parveen was paired with Amitabh Bachchan in 8 films during the peak of Big-B mania attests to her stature and star power.

Amitabh and Parveen complemented each other in the heady first years of the "angry young man" phenomenon. They were paired to each other as the tragic lovers in the seminal "Deewaar" (1975), which is (although a secondary part) one of Babi's most enduring and memorable roles. In "Deewaar" Parveen showed the prospects of a maturing serious actress with much potential. Perhaps she was too pretty, unconventionally Westernized in her look and lithe body and it is very obvious from just one glance that her role in the film would not be the typical Indian heroine. It was Parveen and Zeenat Aman who revolutionized the look and body image of the Bollywood female. Their athletically sculpted bodies and jet set looks modeled after Western tastes signaled new trends for what was desirable and fashionable on the Bollywood screen. The influence of the Zeenat and Parveen explosion of the early to mid 1970s still reverberates today. Current actresses like Bipasha Basu are often compared to Zeenat and Parveen even though it has been 25 years since their heyday.

This said, Parveen was only a major star in Bollywood for a short period. Her star status really began in 1974 with "Majboor" (again opposite Amitabh Bachchan) and peaked with her performance in, "Amar Akbar Anthony" (again with Amitabh) in 1977.Parveen continued to act through the 1980s but her star and image were continually diminished as the years past. She was type cast because of her Western good looks and (like Zeenat Aman) uninhibited nature to 'reveal' (the term for wearing provocative clothes) and received parts as the 'other woman' or 'bad girl' and her acting talents were overlooked and never allowed to stretch after her promising beginning. Parveen was relegated to 'item dancer' status and exploited because of her fabulous face and voluptuous figure.

There was also a tortured and erratic side to Parveen that began to emerge in the late 70s. It was the first stages of schizophrenia that would eventually consume her being and end her career in films. The stories of Parveen’s erratic behavior filled the Bollywood gossip fan magazines of the late 70s and early 80s. Her very real mental illness was covered up by the press and the Bollywood publicity machine. One could sense a certain puritanical morality at work, with gossip eluding to the "Westernized" wild girl who was a bit mad. The publicists and journalist termed Parveen's battle with schizophrenia as 'Her long standing illness' and the general consensus was one of don't ask, don't tell.In 1983, after a prolonged effort to extend her oeuvre by working with middle-of-the-road directors like Vinod Pande (Yeh Nazdeekiyan with Marc Zuber), Esmayel Shroff (Dil Aakhir Dil Hai with Naseeruddin Shah) and Hrishikesh Mukherjee (Rang Birangee opposite Amol Palekar) came to naught, Parveen, the emotional gypsy, mysteriously flew off again, this time to the US.

Some claimed it was her association with the spiritual guru, UG Krishnamurthy, the release of Mahesh Bhatt's Arth (a semi-autobiographical look at his extramarital relationship with Parveen) and her disturbed state of mind that prompted her to abandon everything. But Parveen never confirmed the veracity of any media speculation. When she returned after an extended stay in New York, a now-bloated Parveen vented spleen at Amitabh and accused him of a deep-seated conspiracy.

Parveen Babi's landmark films were ‘Majboor’ (1974), ‘Deewar’ (1975), ‘Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), ‘Suhaag’ (1979), ‘Kaalia’ (1981), ‘Meri Awaaz Suno’ (1981), ‘Namak Halal’ (1982), ‘Ashanti’ (1982), ‘Khuddar’ (1982), ‘Rang Birangi’ (1983).Parveen Babi's famous songs were ‘Teri jheel se gehri aankhon mein’ (Dhuen Ki Lakeer), ‘Aankhen milayenge, nazdeek aayenge’ (Bhanwar), ‘Humko tumse ho gaaya hai pyaar’ (Amar Akbar Anthony), ‘Main toh beghar hoon’ (Suhaag), ‘Baahon mein tere masti ke ghere’ (Kaala Patthar), ‘Pyaar karne waale pyar karte hain’ (Shaan), ‘Maaara thumka badal gayee’ (Kranti), ‘Jawani jaaneman haseen dilruba’ (Namak Halal), ‘Raat baki baat baki’ (Namak Halal), ‘Angrezi mein kehte hai ke I love you’ (Khuddar).

Bollywood will always miss Parveen, one of the leading exponents of style.

Kabir Bedi

What can I say? Even though I was not in touch with her, her 'being no more' comes as a rude shock. We had shared a long relationship and lived together for years. Initially when I moved to Italy and England, she was with me, but she chose to return to Bollywood. After a while, she went abroad herself. You know how it is, once you are out of a relationship, and married, it's hard to be in touch. I knew the details of her life only until she was with me. From what I hear, she had a number of problems. In fact the last time I saw her, was at the memorial of Protima. She came to pay her respects. Even then, she wasn't looking very well. Anyone with whom you have shared a long part of your life, remains with you emotionally, and her passing way is a huge shock. Looking back, I think she was a very complex and volatile person but whatever her problems were, they're not worth discussing at this point. I worked with her in one film called Bullet. I like to remember her as, a small town girl who came from Junagarh and made it in the bright lights of Bombay. She lived life on her own terms and that's never easy. So, I think whatever the circumstances of her death, she certainly left her mark.

Mahesh Bhatt

It hit me like a brick when I first heard the news. It's such a coincidence. I had been talking about her to the director of the National Police Academy, pouring my heart out to him about the time when Parveen had her mental breakdown. How strange that she should die soon after. It took me a while to recover my breath. The suddenness was difficult to take because the last I had heard, she was well in Bangalore. For me, Parveen died twice—the first time when she had her first mental breakdown and was with me. The personality I had known completely collapsed, like a house of cards. All my attempts to put the pieces back together were in vain. Then we parted ways. I have chronicled this intense phase of my life inmy film, Arth, which became the start of my journey as a film-maker. The reality and the subsequent breakdown of a beautiful woman, right in front of my eyes, was so intense, that I had to exorcise it in some way, and film was the best mode. The turbulence and intensity of the time I spent with her is beautifully recorded in the film. I shall always relish the fact that my first claim to fame was as Parveen's boyfriend. She remains one of the beacons of my life. Her generosity, kindness, were unparalleled. We lost touch, but we touched base again in the 1990s when the Gulf war was on. I had bumped into her at a book shop in in Mumbai. We exchanged looks but didn't greet each other. She had become a completely different personality. I would like to remember her as the girl who brought Bollywood to the cover of Time magazine and who died an anonymous death. She made the choice.

Zeenat Aman

She was such a beautiful and successful person in her time, it is sad that the end came like this when no one was there for her. She had become a bit of a recluse in the last decade and we had lost touch. Although we were pitted against each other as rivals by the media in our time, we shared a very amicable relationship. We worked in Ashanti and Mahaan and got along very well on the sets and in real life.

Sanjay Khan

When she first came to my office she managed to shock everybody with her hippie looks. We decided to cast her in Chandi Sona as she was very photogenic. Time magazine had her on its cover in March 1977. Gerald Clarke, the then assosciate editor of Time, was a personal friend and when dining with me one day told me that they were keen to have a Bollywood heroine on the cover. I recommended Parveen's name and when the magazine called her up, she was quite surprised. I lost touch with her soon after. The last time I met her was ten years ago. I feel very sorry that she died lonely and sick.

Yash Chopra

It is the end of a very big star. I have directed two films with her—Deewar and Kala Patthar. She was a very nice person and a thorough professional. She was also very graceful. She used to get along with everybody. Suddenly one day she was missing. I don't know what happened. It must be her depression and loneliness. Her death is very tragic as she has no one to call her own.

Hema Malini

She was such a joy to be around. On the sets of Do Aur Do Paanch , she would have us in splits with her pranks and perfect comic timing. She was a trendsetter and was well-turned out in manner and attire. Parveen will always be remembered as a style icon by her contemporaries.

Rakhee

I'm saddened at the death of a beautiful and wonderful person. I have made only two films with Parveen and remember her as a very co-operative and cheerful human being. After that, she did not meet anyone. It was her own wish to remain cut off from the world. May she rest in peace now.

Jeetendra

She was such a beautiful person. Parveen represented the bohemian Indian woman on celluloid, unafraid to smoke or drink on screen at a time when these were considered taboo.

Junagadh relatives head for Babi's funeral

RAJKOT/AHMEDABAD: The people of Junagadh, who would take pride in the fact that Parveen Babi, born there, had made a mark in tinsel town, received the news of her death with a heavy heart.

"People said that Praveen Khala has stopped opening door for any one, but she will always remain our loving aunt, who warmly insist that we come and visit her. The last time when I was in Mumbai, she called me over and showered my children Murtaza and Ahtesham with love and gifts. She was the best", said a teary Nasreen Babi, whose mother Rahim Sultan Bibi and mother-in-law were Parveen's cousins.

Nasreen stays in Junagadh, where people have fond-memories of Parveen's early years when she did her schooling from the girls college in Azad Chowk. Praveen's father Vali Mohammed Babi was administrator during the Nawab rule in Junagadh. He was later handed over the territory of Baman village, which the family ruled upto 1947.

Babi family now has one house in the Diwan Chowk which is looked after by her maternal uncle, Junez Murad Babi, cousin of Parveen's mother. Relatives said that the family was leaving for Mumbai to offer her last respects.

"Elders in the family have spoken to Dharmendra and Zeenat Aman, who said that the cremation would be only after the family members reach Mumbai," Nasreen said. Parveen's death has come as a shock to the family as only recently, she had called the elders of the family in Junagadh to help her with the details of her will.

"Parveen has recently called my father to make a will but he could not go because of some work," said Murad. Apart from Junagadh, Parveen had friends in Ahmedabad too where she spent around four years in St Xavier's College.

"We used to go partying and dancing together", said danseuse Mallika Sarabhai, who was with Babi in St Xavier's. "A recluse, she was very complex person," Sarabhai recalled

Re: Parveen Babi dies

Tsk. Poor soul. I just happened to upload that Raat Baqi song here a while ago.

Re: Parveen Babi dies

No wonder I used to get confused between Parveen and Zeenat Aman when I was a kid… esp. in the movie Mahaan with Amitabh’s triple role and both Parveen and Zeenat in it - that was very confusing with so many look-alikes

Re: Parveen Babi dies

If there were ever a glamorous woman in Indian film industry, that’s Parveen Bobby. How could such a gorgeous woman die such a terrible lonely death? Life is quite ironic. May her soul rest in peace. And up yours Amitabh!

Re: Parveen Babi dies
