PART TIME MA/MSc?

Salams,

I am finding it hard to meet the financial requirements for my MA, and am trying to switch to a p/t registeration before I am scheduled to start, but the phen chords are not getting back to me on it.

I was wondering if any one here did a p/t MA, and whether they found the combination of studying and working to finance the studying a great strain or test of there endurance.

Do you recommed the course of action?

What jobs in London are flexible hours. I neec advice people.

Wasalaam,

ps: is the devil trying to trip me up?

Re: PART TIME MA/MSc?

If my ass is struggling to meet costs for London, how am I going to meet the additional costs of moving overseas ect?

I still plan on teaching in North America, and have done my research in the subjects needed by contacting the NY B.of. Ed, but thats in a few years.

I'm poor. :(

Re: PART TIME MA/MSc?

Hey LBG, Lemme start off by saying that so much wavering doesn’t do you any good - to think too long about your alternatives, making up your mind about something and then having second thoughts all over again. I’ve seen your endless dithering about pursuing a masters/working/moving to US/moving to Canada etc. Sometimes you’ve got to do what you think is best and leave it to God (Allah Tawwakal).

Having said that, let me now address your question Re: p/t masters and working.

I pursued my undergrad, masters as well as post-grad studies f/t while working f/t – it’s been hell but I’ve lived through it. So a p/t masters with p/t work is definitely doable. Is it a taught masters program or a research-oriented one? For the latter, you might need some time off from work when you’re nearing the completion of your thesis so that’d be the only thing to keep in mind. If it’s a purely taught masters program then you just need a job flexible enough for you to be able to take a few days off around the end of semesters for your exams.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

P.S. Also, when you switch to a p/t status, you typically have to forego any financial aid / scholarships that are available in abundance to f/t grad students. Also, with f/t grad studies, you might have opportunities for TAing courses at your Uni. - so you'll be foregoing these as well.

Re: PART TIME MA/MSc?

Umar, you are my online career's advisor!

I am not so wavering. But my situation changes a lot. I was committed to a f/r MA and then a teaching career. That stands, except the f/t bit. Its STRICTLY a finance issue yaar. My ass is poor in layman's terms. So I'll need to fund myself by work. I'll try for an AHRB grant come Dec 05 but its a tough ask. My grades are good, never got a C at undergraduate level. :)

Its a taught masters. Both are, thats the offer I have, and the new course I am applying to aswell.

Which type of jobs are that flexible, so I can work around my classes?

Re: PART TIME MA/MSc?

McDonalds?

Re: PART TIME MA/MSc?

Hahahahahahahaha......no. Try again.

Re: PART TIME MA/MSc?

Campus jobs are your best bet - try looking for admin type positions (Registrar's office/ Facilities & Services / Student Unions etc.) which tend to be flexible cuz they run in-synch with the Univ. schedules... i.e. less busy times during exam times etc. and they pay decent as well.

Secondly, you can try tutoring centres... and something like this will be a good add-on to your resume' when you want to start teaching.

Re: PART TIME MA/MSc?

Will a union give me f/t work before I commence, I'd need a financial buffer of several thousand pounds on top of initial tuition and living costs, giving me time to find a job...

Re: PART TIME MA/MSc?

LBG, no - campus jobs are usually only offered once you commence your studies. That being said, what's stopping you from seeking work at the institution where you did your undergrad?

Besides this, try to find work with NGOs and Community Interest Groups... they'd tie in well with your liberal arts background.

Re: PART TIME MA/MSc?

The 2 unis are far away. Hence I'd rather not work there and study here. I should line up a job in the area as soon as any p/t switch is ok'd?

Central London must be awash with flexible jobs. Even if it means Tesco's or something.

Hey, how did you study and work f/t?

Are you superman?
