South Asian Youth Action (SAYA!)
South Asian Youth Action (SAYA!) is a non-profit community-based organization dedicated to creating social change and opportunities for South Asian youth to realize their fullest potential. Our programs include leadership development, academic support and college preparation, employment training and placement, sports and artistic opportunities, as well as counseling and general social support.
Position Summary: SAYA! seeks a highly motivated, creative and intelligent individual, committed to social change, to develop and expand its youth employment program. The goal of SAYA!’s youth employment program is to provide youth with the necessary skills and information that would facilitate their successful entry and retention in the job market.
Supervisor: Program Director
Responsibilities:
Develop employment assessments and plans of action with program participants to help determine their skills and interests.
Coordinate/and or conduct job readiness workshops for youth on topics such as cover letter and resume writing, interview skills, basic computer instruction, job searches, and other topics.
Assist youth individually to develop resumes, applications and cover letters.
Build on contacts with local businesses and other potential employers to access summer and yearlong jobs for youth.
Conduct outreach in communities, schools, religious institutions, and social services agencies.
Ensure the placement of 25 youth in jobs or paid internships for Summer 2003.
Monitor placement and provide youth with support when necessary.
Conduct periodic evaluation of programs and services.
Maintain documentation of all services provided and prepare periodic reports to Executive Director and Program Director.
Attend staff meetings as needed.
Qualifications:
At least 2 yrs experience running job readiness/employment programs.
Ability to manage multiple responsibilities; highly organized and self motivated
Good communication and writing skills.
Experience working with youth.
Ability to work evenings and weekends.
Proven interest in the areas of employment, community and youth development.
Interest in/knowledge of South Asian immigrant communities, particularly those from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Guyana, Sri Lanka and Trinidad.
Bilingual in a South Asian language a plus
