I dont buy the sensitivities bit, I am in no mood to assume any sort of guilt because of the actions of some misguided jackasses from KSA. If i wad calling the shots, I would not have started the project where it is just because of knowing the backlash from idiots and the ongoing threat it will have from idiots, but backing off on this now is accepting attribution of some guilt and I say hell no..because then people will have sensitivities to one thing or another and one convenient excuse after another.

exactly.
Nobody is asking to build a Saudi embassy on ground zero. It is a masjid being proposed by Americans (who are Muslims).
Concerning the Japanese comparison,
First of all, wasnt Emperor Hirohito a Japanese God and do we really want the same type of religious freedoms as the Japanese? Secondly, who would such an American embassy be honoring? How many civilian Americans perished when the bombs were dropped on Japan? I understand that more than 1% of the victims of the 9/11 bombing were Muslims. I dont think these victims of 9/11 would object to such a mosque. Finally, did the Japanese close all Christian institutions in Hiroshima and nagasaki? I do not think so:
Now, dont get me wrong, I am not saying a masjid near ground zero should be a shoe in. The Imam at such a masjid cannot be some mullah from a ME/ Pakistani madrassah. He must inspire confidence among Americans (including non Muslims) as someone who understands our unique American concerns, in my opinion. What people should be debating is who is Imam Feisal and what does he stand for?
what... a jew is supporting the mosque? now, I'm a 110% convinced that it's a bad idea.
CM, aren't you also dutybound as a certified momin to oppose the mosque now? surely we don't to be caught agreeing with jews of all ppl. I mean what would the Palestinians and the arabs think? haww haye.
which makes it even more criminal... to waste a 100 million dollars on this wasteful "community center" when there are others in so-called ummah who need it badly and urgently.
Your biases are not the subject of reality for any normal human being.
Maroush the comment was sarcastic in nature. The comparison to the holocaust was a bit over the top in his entire speech. But there are New York jews who do support the mosque.
As for the money issue, must say you wankers make all these comments about money better spent and then don't complain at all when other religious groups do the same. Its rather annoying you lot apply unhealthy standards to muslim communities and separate ones for other communities.
I find it interesting as a political dynamic. The new century will eventually lead to a change of the West as the centre of power and global standards. This is one of the many actions being taken by the developed world to set that into motion.

The opposition to the mosque has little to do with how much it would have cost. In any case, with this particular argument, even 100 bucks on a personal expense could qualify as being wasteful...
Second, it's a bit much to suggest this argument only applies to Muslims, and what's more only in this one case.
