I guess most notorious char (that beats others hands down) is "BHAooOOO" :)
As parents, we have never done that and hope we dont have to do that! We try to tell them exact reason for which we are asking them to do something. For example if they are not going to bed instead of saying "so jaoo nahi tu BHAAAooOOO aa jayee ga" we simply tell them the consequences f sleeping late (i.e waking up late next morning, missing their fav cartoon, going to school late etc )
My ammi was against scaring kids from jin balas so we were never given the torture. Neither have I ever done that to my kids. Would hate to get them scared of something they can't even see.
My parents never did the Jin Baba scares, they weren't into that. But mom had some funny ideas.
I remember once, when I was little, I was playing around with my mom's nail polish. And I got it all over my palm and it had dried.....so it looked like blood. Even though I knew it wasn't blood, I hated the way it looked and it scared me. Then my mom saw me and helped me scrub it off with remover. And I remember asking her in a whimpery voice if it would come off and she said it wouldn't. LOOOOOL. I guess that was her funny way of trying to keep me away from her makeup.
And this is a pretty mean story, with a funny ending. As a kid, I was watching tv with my brother one afternoon. Then I got up and went to the bedroom where my mom usually lay down for an afternoon rest. Well, this particular afternoon, I go in there and my mom is lying down with her eyes closed. So, i call out her name and shake her up......but there's no response. I did this several times, but got no response at all. You see, my mom was playing dead on purpose! So, I go get my brother. And he tries waking her up, but there's no response. My brother being the sensible one, says "We should use the phone and call for help." But, I, being the more creative one, said, "No, we should dump water on her!" My brother didn't agree, and I didn't listen to him. I went into the bathroom and got the lota (an orange colored pitcher) and filled it up to the top with water. Then I went into the room and let my mom have it!!!!!!!!!! All that water from the lota went through her nose and into her mouth and she woke up right away, coughing the water up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!!! My mom then confessed that she was only pretending to be unconscious in order to see what we would do.......and that she was hoping I was going to throw** only a few drops of water** in her face from a kitchen glass.......and that she had NO idea i would throw the entire lota brimming full of water on her face!!!!!!!!! My mom was too shocked to be mad at me.....and after a while she found it hilarious. Me, on the other hand, I thought she deserved it for playing such a mean trick on me!
Now, I know where I get pranky sense of humor from! Sheesh.
sheen: i don’t think it’s ‘cruel’ .. i think it’s a *completely *unnecessary thing to scare your kids with ‘jinn baba’ - the early experiences and attitudes that children are exposed to have life-long effects on their personalities, and honestly..what a sorry legacy it is, to give your child..to have them be afraid of something that doesn’t even exist.
i think that as new parents, we now educate ourselves a lot about bringing up kids instead of just doing what was done back home. we buy all the right developmental toys and take them to all the right activity groups..i think it would be a shortcoming on the parents part to make their children afraid of stuff.
okay, on the other hand - pranks are a completely different thing. they can be comical and amusing for the children; whereas ‘go to sleep or churail will come’..not so comical or amusing for the child..
I only had to scare my daughter once when she just wouldn't sit in her car seat. I actually took her to a cop standing nearby and asked him to tell her the consequences of not sitting in a carseat. Never had to tell her again!
