Parents reading your mail..

(Following on from the nosey MIL thread)

Is it acceptable for parents to open and read your mail?

Re: Parents reading your mail..

I think everyone (including parents, parents-in-law, spouse, siblings, friends etc) should respect others privacy. Someone's mail is his/her personal thing and should not be read by anyone else.

My parents never read any of my mail even they were mostly from my university or the companies where i applied for a job. Youngest sister once open the envelop and read the mail and my mother told her to never do it again.
Can't say this about my in-laws as they are habitual of intruding others' privacy.

Re: Parents reading your mail..

No. That's below par. Eurrgh..

Re: Parents reading your mail..

I personally don't mind. Then again I really don't receive anything too private in the mail. Even my bank statements are not sent to home address instead they are online so I can't think of anything that would be too private.

My dad checks the mail more than we do and he rarely (if ever) opens anything that doesn't belong to him. He just leaves everyone's mail on the table unopened.

Re: Parents reading your mail..

I lived at home until I was 22. My dad would open things like bank statements b/c I just didn't like dealing with it...lol. But then again he was a joint account holder on all my accounts at that time so he could access that info. anytime he wanted anyway. However, growing up....my dad never opened any other private mail that came in my name. Letter from friends/cousins overseas (lol...pre-email era) and mail from university.....he always gave everything directly to me.

My husband doesn't even open mail that comes in my name only. And I don't open mail that comes in his name. Neither one of us has ever told the other NOT to open it. And all the mail is usually opened and left on our coffee table anyway so there's no "hiding" anything. Whether it's mail from the bank or packages from Sephora....he leaves everything unopened on the table.

Whether its parents, in-laws, even spouses....I think its absolutely unacceptable for anyone to open mail that is addressed to another ADULT. Unless the person directly told someone in the house that they don't mind their mail being opened, all mail addressed to an adult should be left alone (ex. wife telling husband directly that she doesn't mind him opening her mail). It all boils down to showing respect for other ADULTS who share the home with you.

Re: Parents reading your mail..

why parent should wipe you butt? thats invasion of privacy too.

Re: Parents reading your mail..

I don’t care if my parents or husband open my (postal) mail. All I get nowadays is bills and credit card offers anyway :disgust:
Email is different, while I’ve given my email password to my hubby on occasions, I’m definitely not okay with him reading every email I get. Neither do I want to read his.

Re: Parents reading your mail..

Actually, I am a private person and I hate it when anyone opens my mail or email (if they are using my computer or phone). My parents used to open my letters when I was in high school and I objected once or twice then they stopped. I mean I don't want my parents to be knowing how much my monthly credit card bill is or where I spend my money. Already they have issues with expensive birthday gifts for friends, the occasional dinner with friends or coworkers, or my salon spending. I also wouldn't like anyone reading my personal conversations (texts/emails) with others. It's different if I share on my own. But to have someone go through your stuff without permission is just a no-no for me.

Re: Parents reading your mail..

I don't think most desi parents have any concept of "privacy" within the family.

Re: Parents reading your mail..

I've opened my mom's mail a lot of times. They were just bank statements. Bank statements aren't private in our house, we just tell each other how much money we have anyway.

Hmm. I don't think I get any paper mail that I deem private. That stuff stays in my email.

Parents don't open my mail at all but I open theirs :D they don't mind
