*Michael Zehaf-Bibeau parents’ statement: ‘We are so sorry’ - Politics - CBC News

The following is the full text of a statement issued to The Associated Press by the parents of Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, the man authorities say killed a soldier at Ottawa’s war memorial, then stormed Parliament before being shot dead. The statement was in response to an AP email which asked about reports that their son was mentally unstable or otherwise vulnerable.

**"Hi, I am writing this note on behalf of my husband and myself. No words can express the sadness we are feeling at this time. We are so sad that a man lost his life. He has lost everything and he leaves behind a family that must feel nothing but pain and sorrow. We send our deepest condolences to them although words seem pretty useless. We are both crying for them. We also wish to apologize for all the pain, fright and chaos he created. We have no explanation to offer. I am mad at our son, I don’t understand and part of me wants to hate him at this time. You write that our son was vulnerable, we don’t know, we (he) was lost and did not fit in. I his mother spoke with him last week over lunch, I had not seen him for over five years before that. So I have very little insight to offer. We don’t wish to be part of any media circus, we don’t think it will add anything to the conversation. Please respect our privacy although many may not feel we deserve any … Once again we are so sorry.

there’s an interesting commentary on the shootings in Ottawa by Haroon Siddiqui in The Toronto Star:

Re: parents of Michael Zehaf-Bibeau(shooter) at ottawa.

sad to read the parent’s heartfelt letter. this is what the terrorists do…they don’t even care for their own parents or loved ones. they bring so much pain and shame to his own parents.

these terrorists are like double edged sword. they cut with both sides. one side cuts the victim and his/her loved ones and the other side cuts his own family and loved ones.

the Muslim community at large goes through shame and a lot of inconveniences as a result of their actions.

Re: parents of Michael Zehaf-Bibeau(shooter) at ottawa.

According to democracynow.org, Michael had history of drug and robbery.

His passport was seized, because he was high-risk-traveller.(a term used for people likely to go join IS)

Re: parents of Michael Zehaf-Bibeau(shooter) at ottawa.

yeah…and I’m beginning to wonder how effective the policy to seize passports is…if you become high risk then aren’t you high-risk where you live too?
I guess they needed evidence before they could do anything…

Re: parents of Michael Zehaf-Bibeau(shooter) at ottawa.

he was arrested but let go because prosecutor didn’t have enough evidence to hold him any longer.

he was one of the 90 Canadians on CSIS’ and RCMP’s ‘WATCH LIST’…he was being monitored but had no ankle electronic device to track him. they could NOT arrest him again until he broke the law…it was too late when he killed someone.

i guess the laws are lax. :frowning: one person had to die to make us realize that. sad! :frowning:

Re: parents of Michael Zehaf-Bibeau(shooter) at ottawa.

That is some thing to think about. He was on the watch list.
But no one was probably watching him, or keeping track of his moves.

Re: parents of Michael Zehaf-Bibeau(shooter) at ottawa.

he was being watched but no electronic monitoring equipment was on him…like electronic ankle strap that would have tracked his movements. again, tracking his movements wouldn’t have helped because he was free to go anywhere. they couldn’t arrest him until he committed or was in the process of committing a crime.

same thing happened two days earlier when another recent Muslim convert, who was being watched by CSIS and the RCMP, ran over two soldiers, killing one of them. he was sitting in his car in a parking lot waiting for the soldiers to come out. he did what he was wanted to do…ambush the soldiers!

laws need to be stiffened in order for the intelligence agencies to put tracking devices on the suspects.

Re: parents of Michael Zehaf-Bibeau(shooter) at ottawa.

Since he had asked to be jailed, I feel like there should have been a program of some sort they could have referred him to.

He was spending a lot of money (I think around $160) on heroine DAILY … mix that in with a desire to join an extremist group and I think it’s absolutely irresponsible to not monitor such an individual. I hope with the rest on their so called watch list - they don’t make the same mistakes.
