About Nikkah, I have two opinions. As I read them in my Islamiat book.
1) To search a partner, it should be the duty of parents. because Islam teaches us the respect of other persons and also to avoid friendship between opposite sex. And it also teaches us the "Parda" of eye. Why the right is given to parents, the logical reason is they are much experienced then the young ones.
2) If the person has choosen some one, he/she can tell them but need their parents agreement. Well the children has a slight right to refuse the propsal. But without making their parents angry.

but parents cannot get their children married forcefully or otherwise.
n children shud marry with their parent's consent.
