as challenging as it can become, parents, siblings and other people involved in the lives of children with medical / mental conditions, have the untiring responsibility to ensure the safety and proper care for them.
this thread is intended to help discuss children’s medical/ mental conditions which require considerable care-giver provided care to the child who has the condition/s.
in your opinion, can we feel that people normally are very sensitive to the needs of children with medical/ mental conditions?
Re: Parenting Children with Medical / mental conditions
I can answer this from the persepective of a parent with a "special needs" child. He is learning delayed and likely autistic but not severely handicapped (meaning wheelchair or hospital care etc)
I have to say that there isnt always a great deal of understanding in the general population. I've had people ask - right in front of my sons - "Whats wrong with HIM?". But I've also seen many people who are very interested and caring. It helps greatly that we live in USA and that there is an amazing amount of support and caring in the school system for special needs kids. This is not the case in Pak where many disabled children are almost hidden away and have no support system in place.
People dont like to talk about disabilities, esp if its a child, esp if that child is in their own family. Like its a shameful thing.
Me? I'm so proud of all my boys. Yet my eldest is my "sunshine boy". Even with all his struggles and troubles, he is the most joyful person Ive ever met. He brings a smile to everyone he meets and has the purest, happiest, most loving heart. And I have no problem accepting him for what and who he is. He can teach many people about the joy of living which is something that not many of us learn even in a lifetime.
Re: Parenting Children with Medical / mental conditions
I dont think all people are sensitive to children with medical/mental health conditions.
People are either petrified and dont know how to act or are insensitive.
Children are children they love to play and laugh so treat them that way.
There is no one in my immediate family with any conditions but i work with children with autism on a voluntary basis and they struggle alot in school and some people really do not understand whats going on. But society becoming much more educated and more specal schools and more funding things are getting better!
