Has anyone dealt with taking care of a parent with dementia?
Keeping them at home can become so unmanageable. Yet, there is such a stigma in our culture to sending them away to an assisted living facilty.

Re: Parent with dementia?
taking care of a person with dementia is a very hard thing indeed. it's like a full time job in itself. as far as i know, a lot of peopel opt to take care of the patient in their own homes, instead of sending them away. at the same time, it is more beneficial for the patient to be in a familiar environment.
there are lots of support groups out there, as well as online. look for a chapter of alzheimer's society in your area. they really help you with that stuff. i know the local chapter in my area has a day care center, where others take care of the family member while you can take time out for yourself, and do house chores and things like that. also, enlist the help of family members. but do not forget to take time out for yourself.
Re: Parent with dementia?
my father has dementia and my mum looks after him full time and me and my brothers and sister chip in its really hard looking after a grown man at times and sometimes you don't understand what they want and it also hurts to see your parent like this....
