I won’t even get into the whole emotional aspect of letting your kid go to KG.
I’m going to stick to talking about what to pack for lunch?
There arent any microwaves or teachers helping the kids along.
I feel like this really limits the menu.
Welcome to the bane of every parent’s existence…the dreaded school lunch dilemmas!!
My kids usually take one of the following type of sandwiches:
Chicken salad (I’ll make a batch weekly)
BLT made with halal turkey bacon
Cucumber Cream Cheese
Cream Cheese & Jelly (since PB is out)
Then I’ll put in something from the following:
Grapes
Pudding or Gogurt
Clementines (peeled)
Apple trays (sometimes they come with cheese cubes & pretzels)
Individual hummus cup with crackers
Baby Carrots & ranch dip
Sometimes I’ll give them a coldpasta salad or leftover spaghetti/oasta from dinner…an insulted thermos cup will keep it warm until lunch time
I hate making lunches…especially since my kid is so uber-picky about what she will eat. I have no suggestions for you so let’s talk about the emotional aspect…
Oh, and they will get lunch from the school cafeteria when their is something suitable on the menu (grilled cheese sandwich, cheese pizza, fish nuggets) which is usually about once or twice a week.
Do your kids do chicken nuggets? I am having the same dilemma with my daughter…dunno what to send. I was thinking along the lines of what khatti said.
Perhaps even send pilau/daal chaval or other rice in thermos bowl as those are faves. As picky as S isbhe will eat daal chavel when I send it.
Do they sell sliced and packed apples that wont go brown by lunch? I need a fruit alternative to bananas n grapes. Oh maybe cut of melon etc in a small bowl for snack.
I just went grocery shopping with her and got some yogurts, crackers, pudding, multigrain chils for snacks n sides
Muniya…Awww I know how you feel darling but let’s buck up for our kid’s sake
I am getting down to make everything at home for her; I am signing her up for milk/pizza fridays but that’s about it, and her teacher told me that if I am sending leftover food for lunch it can’t be more than a day old, so there goes the idea of cooking on sundays for me
I am thinking …
Week 1: chicken salad on whole wheat bread cut in half and packed individually for each break, along with cut up fruit i.e strawberries or a mandarin
Week 2: cream cheese and jelly sandwiches with cherry tomatoes/cheese stick
Week 3: keema filled in small hot dog buns with a small ziplock bag of popcorn (popped in the morning)
Week 4: homemade chicken kebabs in a burger bun (I already did a trial at home and she loves them mA)
The idea is to make the lunch the night before so the sandwiches are well chilled in the fridge, it was even suggested that if making meat sandwiches use frozen bread so by the next day around lunch time it’s all soft and fresh tasting, I am also gonna send a juice box and milk in a her little stainless steel bottle…hope everything works for all of us iA…let’s get thru this month together
I am not a mum and nor am I about to go to KG and I have no idea what im doing on this thread.
But I really did not appreciate it when my mum gave me really pungent smelling chicken salan and and chawal. I used to throw it away because it was stinky.
SO if your kid is totally cool with that - then go for the daal chawal option but me and my bro hated those lunches!
Hey if my kid can deal with smelling all the ham/salami/roast beef stuff…they can deal with his dal chawal whic doesnt have much of a smell.
Issue is he is super picky and does not eat bread/tortilla wraps so I am really limited what to give him
you can buy pre sliced apple snack packs at walmart etc…the one I get comes with grapes & pretzels too..my husband gets mad saying it’s a waste of money and why don’t i slice the apples myself but whatevs…they brown up if you preslice it yourself lol
For my chicken salad, I use whole chicken breast, split in two that is still on the bone with the skin (helps keep it flavorful and moist, after it’s cooked I remove the skin and take the meat off the bone)…i rub it with a little olive oil and sprinkle it liberally with sea salt and fresh ground black pepper and just roast it on a broiler rack/pan in the oven at 375 degrees until it’s cooked through..once it’s cool enough to handle, i take the meat off the bone and skin off and cut the meat into bite size peices/chunks.
To the meat I add finely diced celery and a chutki of curry powder, a little bit of dijon mustard and mayonnaise and just mix it all up. I’ll usually make the sandwiches in a pita pocket by lining the pita with thinly sliced cucumber and lettuce and then mounding in the chicken salad. My boys go crazy over it.
I haven’t tried almond butter yet…we tried the “sun butter” which is the allergen free one made with sunflower seeds and it tasted like chalk
