Now I am confused.

People say its terrible for liver, but then I hear its okay to take it if the dosage doesn’t exceed three tablets a day? So what is it?

Re: Paracetamol and Liver

Yes, it is dangerous for liver. The most important thing is NOT to take it khali pait, it could lead to liver failure!!!!!

And if you need to take it three times a day, better take a lighter pain killer.

Re: Paracetamol and Liver

Well , when I was being diagnosed with hepatitis doctors strictly told me not to have paracetamol at all . It was like poison for me. Worst thing was that before the diagnosis I was given heavy dosage of it (3 times a day) bcuz I was expecting and had very high fever and they wanted to break my fever …result my SGPT ( a LFT value) went drastically high i.e. 2000 where as the normal ranges are from 3 to 33. Doctors immediately stopped the pain killer after diagnosis and I think with in 2-3 weeks it came down to 800 (still V. high it was) but it came down. So I feel that it is bad for liver because it increases SGPT & affects the liver negatively.

This is the definition of SGPT … SGPT: Serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase, an enzyme that is normally present in liver and heart cells. SGPT is released into blood when the liver or heart are damaged. The blood SGPT levels are thus elevated with liver damage (for example, from viral hepatitis) or with an insult to the heart (for example, from a heart attack). Some medications can also raise SGPT levels. Also called alanine aminotransferase (ALT).

Re: Paracetamol and Liver

Paracetamol may be dangerous to people with liver damage or liver disease but it NOT dangerous to healthy people and the maximum dose a day **4grams **in 24 hours.

Also paracetamol is FINE on an empty stomach its Non Steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as ibuprofen, nurofen and aspirin which should not be taken on an empty stomach,

JUst read the packet shak..its pretty reliable!!

Its a very safe painkiller used all the time in hospitals, also whoever said take a lesser pain killer? errmmm there isnt one.

Re: Paracetamol and Liver

Re: Paracetamol and Liver

The liver has many roles in keeping someone healthy...without the liver there's no way we can survive.
One of it's main roles is detoxification, it takes harmful toxins and chemicals from our body and conjugates them with other substances in order to allow for their removal from the body. Now paracetomol is a drug so it undergoes drug metabolism in the liver. When it gets metabolised in the liver it actually gets converted into a more toxic form which is hepatotoxic (toxic to the liver), so an excess of this can be harmful to the liver.

Now the liver is a very unique organ as it has a regenerative capacity. This means that even if 75% of your liver was damaged beyond repair the other 25% has the ability to self renew into a fully functioning liver again. Also, the liver can function correctly with as little as 25% of it working...now this may seem like a good thing but it can cause problems because a person won't get any symptoms of liver failure until it's too late to do anything about it. This means that your liver can slowly be destroyed and you won't know anything about it until it gets to a point where it is unable to regenerate and that's when it's too late and a liver transplant is required.

I think paracetamol toxicity is one of the main causes for acute liver failure in the west so basically don't take an excess of paracetomol! It's not good for you. Hope that helps.

Re: Paracetamol and Liver

^ paracetamol in overdose not just taking it.

I know patients who have been on paracetamol for years and years for arthritis or back pain...and their livers are just fine.

Re: Paracetamol and Liver

^ Yeah I know. I did say an excess of paracetamol was bad for you.

Re: Paracetamol and Liver

ahhh sorry syraa!

I thought you meant taking it alot was bad for you, by overdose i mean like taking 10 tablets in one go or taking like 20grams in a day.

Re: Paracetamol and Liver

Aw thank you!

I have heard about the liver, regeneration is amazing! Only if the human brain was also regenerative we wouldn’t have so many idiots in the world today  As for me I only take it if an ache is getting in the way of working or sleep, other than that I tend to let it runs it course.

Thanks for all the replies too guys, now why can’t we design a painkiller that has ZERO side-effect :hinna:

Saira get to work, use your degree to good use.
