Paks will build ties with Israel: Musharraf meets US Jewish leaders

Musharraf is in fact courageous leader. Pakistan was never threatened or in direct confrontation with Israel. It is useless MAToo mentality that has kept the two countries away. Granted there exists Palestinian issue and it should be resolved amicably. However countries do establish ties even when thorny issues keep them at war. Pakistan has had diplomatic ties with Bharat even when the two fought many wars.

Musharraf meets US Jewish leaders
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has said his country will take steps to build ties with Israel as the Middle East peace process progresses.

He made the comments at a ground breaking dinner meeting with members of the American Jewish Congress.

He is the first leader of a Muslim nation that has no diplomatic ties with Israel to hold a public dialogue with Jewish leaders.

Israel and Pakistan recently held talks in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

I am convinced that peace in Palestine will revive the historical ties between Islam and Judaism

President Musharraf

President Musharraf’s historic address in New York began with bread being broken and prayers from the Koran being recited.

He was given a standing ovation as he arrived for the meeting at which he called for the establishment of a Palestinian state to end violence in the Middle East and bring security to Israel.

“Israel must come to terms with geopolitical realities and allow justice to prevail for the Palestinians,” he said.

“I am convinced that peace in Palestine that does justice to both the Israelis and the Palestinians will bring to a close the sad chapter in the history of the Middle East [and] will revive the historical ties between Islam and Judaism.”

He also criticised Islamic societies for failing to embrace modernity.

“Many of us remain wrapped in a time warp, still struggling to reconstruct our political, social and economic systems to respond to the challenges of our times,” he was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency.

Secret talks

The meeting comes three days after President Musharraf shook hands with Israel’s prime minister at the United Nations.

Both countries are said to have held two years of secret talks which culminated in a meeting of their two foreign ministers in Turkey, two weeks ago.

After the talks Pakistan’s foreign minister said that his country had decided to “engage” with Israel after Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza.

But the talks were criticised by hardline Islamic groups in Pakistan.

Pakistan has never recognised the state of Israel, but its neighbour India opened diplomatic ties with the Jewish state in 1992.

Good job!

Re: Paks will build ties with Israel: Musharraf meets US Jewish leaders

**Musharraf was clearly moved by the reception, saying he “never expected a Pakistani leader to be greeted by this community with this sort of ovation.”
**
Oh baba! Pakistan is a giant country of 150 million people. It is time to wake up and realize that other countries including Israel are looking up to Pakistan for establishing peace in the world. Pakistan will get all its due respect if we continue to strive for improving our lives and lives of fellow human beings in other countries.

Musharraf should have kept the speech relatively short and focused more on bilateral trade, and culture exchanges between Israel and Pakistan. Palestinian and Jerusalem issues are deep and complex. These should be discussed in one-to-one dialogue and not a public forum.

As he was talking to a group in the US, he should have stressed on the need for Pakistani access to markets, both in US and Israel. He should have hinted on Pakistan’s need for close cooperation in the fields of science and technology.

I also feel that Pakistan should open Hebrew language centers in its universities.

U.S. Jews welcome Musharraf

World Jewish Congress holds festive dinner for Pakistani president in honor of first public Israel-Pakistan negotiations; Musharraf: ‘I never expected this kind of reception’

History in New York: Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf participated Saturday night in a festive dinner hosted in his honor by the World Jewish Congress in New York.

Musharraf was greeted by a standing ovation by hundreds of U.S. Jewish leaders, who gathered to congratulate the Pakistani leader for opening public diplomatic contacts with Israel following the disengagement from Gaza and the northern West Bank.

Musharraf was clearly moved by the reception, saying he “never expected a Pakistani leader to be greeted by this community with this sort of ovation.”

The dinner began with two blessings, one Jewish, one Muslim. The imam who gave the Muslim benediction translated part of his words:

“Muhammad was told by the one, almighty God to accept the Jews, the children of Abraham. Almighty, blessed God told the Prophet Muhammad to open a dialogue between Jews and Muslims. I pray to God that he accept our efforts, our prayers and our blessings,” he said.

Israel-Pakistan: not natural enemies

In his speech, Musharraf spoke about Pakistan-Israel relations, and said there is no natural enmity between the two countries.

“Pakistan has no direct conflict with Israel, and we are not a threat to Israel’s security. We believe Israel represents no threat to Pakistan’s national security. But our people have deep sympathy for the Palestinian people, and their legitimate desire for a state,” he said.

"In response to Sharon’s courageous decision to pull out from Gaza, Pakistan has decided to establish formal ties with the State of Israel. With the progression of the peace process towards the establishment of a Palestinian state, we intend to take further steps toward normalization, collaboration and the establishment of diplomatic relations with Israel, "Musharraf said.

The Pakistani leader stated he is convinced that the Israeli-Palestinian dispute constitutes the central, though not the singular, cause for terror in the Middle East.

“Because of the great impact this problem has, the international community, and the United States in particular, are responsible for securing a peaceful resolution in the region. The Israelis and the Palestinians must strive for reconciliation,” he said.

Self-defense, political realities

Musharraf also acknowledged Israel’s right to self-defense, but said it must also come to terms with the geopolitical realities of the region.

“The Palestinians aspire for independence and a strong state as much as any other country,” he said. “We welcome Israel’s decision to withdraw from Gaza, and now the peace process must continue, as stated and agreed in the Road Map peace plan.”

Musharraf stressed that Jerusalem’s fate represents the most sensitive issue within any future resolution.

“Nothing is more sensitive than the fate of the holy city of Jerusalem, al-Quds or al-Sharif as we call it. This city is holy to the Jews, the Christians and the Muslims,” he said. “Any future settlement in Jerusalem must consider and respect Jerusalem’s cosmopolitan character, as well as international law and decisions made by the Security Council.”

Expanding the process
The Pakistani leader said he hopes that the disengagement plan will signal the outset of a wider process.

“We hope Israel will soon withdraw from the West Bank, a move which will enable the establishment of a Palestinian independent state. Respecting Palestinian aspirations will grant Israel the security it yearns for,” Musharraf said.

“I am convinced that a just peace will end this sad chapter in Middle Eastern history. It will also revive the historic relation between Islam and Judaism, and uproot the rage and frustration that motivate extremism and violence,” he said.

“What better signal for peace could there be than if countries like Pakistan established delegations in Israel?”

‘Jewish Congress must use its influence’

Musharraf thanked the World Jewish Congress President Edgar M. Bronfman for holding the event, describing it as “an exceptional opportunity.”

“The sad events of recent years had created tension between people of the three faiths, and therefore this is a historical occasion. I feel privileged to deliver my speech in front of so many of the United States’ most respected and influential community.”

The President of the Jewish Congress, Jack Rosen said that “tonight’s event represents the outcome of a two-year’s effort.” Rosen said he discussed the initiative with President Bush several weeks ago, stating that the president was thrilled about it, and said he considered it to be a significant opportunity.

Musaharff concluded his speech by calling on the members of the Congress to use their influence for putting an end to the dispute.

“I have always believed that it takes much more courage to settle and reconcile than it does to fight. I call on Israel to demonstrate this kind of courage. I call on the World Jewish Congress, and the entire Jewish community, to exercise their great influence for putting an end to the Palestinians dispute once and for all, so that we can begin an era of peace in the Middle East, and maybe in the entire world,” he said.

“Failure is no longer an option.”

Re: Paks will build ties with Israel: Musharraf meets US Jewish leaders

May seem attractive right now but in the long run, this unchecked relationship will prove devastating.

This matter is not as simple as it has been projected and I can see only those who don;t know the matter in detail are supporting it............... because apparantly they don;t find any harm in it..

Geographical distance with Israel doesn't matter. It is the war of ideas that is fought these days, the weapons are not missiles and atomic bombs, the weapon today is media........

What happened now, in 1967 after the 6 days war, the Israeli Prime minister "Bin Gorion" while celebrating the victory in Paris issued a statement, "We are not threatened by any Arab country now, except Pakistan"

I ask, what happened to the Israelis today. At that time, when Pakistan was not a nuclear power, they were issuing a statement like that and today the statement is coming form the israeli foreign minister, Shalom, "We have no danger from the nuclear program of Pakistan" What a shear diplomacy??????????

Where are we all?

Thse are the same Yahoodi, who had asked Liaqat Ali Khan in New York not to implement Islam in Pakistan, not to make Pakistan an Islamic state????? What happened now??????

Israel, who's parliament building has a statement written on its top (Interior) " O Israel, your boundaries are from nail to Euphrates" What does that mean??????? Why we don;t pay attention????????

This so called "diplomatic relationship" is like "Let me place a step in your home, I'll make my place to sit myself".......

Re: Paks will build ties with Israel: Musharraf meets US Jewish leaders

this is no surprise. infact many have been talking abt this for the last 4-5 years ever since musharaf came into power. and now with PM having an israeli wife, relations with israel will def become stronger. first by putting musharaf in power then installing shaukat aziz as PM, they are now free to do whatever they want.

Re: Paks will build ties with Israel: Musharraf meets US Jewish leaders

The PM (Shaukat Aziz) does not have an Israeli wife - that was a ridiculous rumour that was spread by a rather malicious reporter. Not only does he have a** Pakistani wife, of Bihari-Mohajir origin** but most of those who know him could not hide their laughter at such pathetic allegations, and in the end the newspaper that printed the story had to apologize.

Re: Paks will build ties with Israel: Musharraf meets US Jewish leaders

You know what i am from pakistan and i am telling you this that traitor musharaff is just a poodle who belongs to George bush he is no different than hosni mubarak, abdullah of jordan, assad of syria they all poodles who are owned by the likes of Bush it is so clear even westerners know this, these tyrants attack thier own people because they want to destroy israel. Once these tyrants are removed i gurantee the first place the muslims will go to is occupied palestine and we not coming for a cup of tea!

Re: Paks will build ties with Israel: Musharraf meets US Jewish leaders

I am from Pakistan and Musharaf is by far the best leader Pakistan has had since Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, another man of great vision and forward looking ideas. Musharraf has put extremists and terrorists in their place, and brought historic economic success and development to Pakistan. He started an open national debate on ties with Israel a couple of years ago, and he has tied final recognition to the creation of an independent Palestinian state. This is a policy that the vast majority of Pakistani’s I have talked to think is realistic and will support, whatever a few fundementalists will say. Israel has it’s fanatics as well, as you know, and they shout the loudest, but never get anywhere.

Israel is an Illegal state. Those who deny it are in darkness. We as Pakistanis shouldn't have any problem with Jews but if it comes to the state of Israel, it is Illegal, Illegitimate on Palsatinian land................

Sorry Israeli girl, I have already said that I am not against Jews but against the state of Israel........secondly, I am not sure what do you mean when you say "we should forget difference in the name of religion" as I have found many many verses in "Talmud" that go against what you have just said.
