Waqar given nod for Zimbabwe Tests, ODIs
Khalid H. Khan - 26 October 2002

Waqar Younis will continue to captain Pakistan in both Tests and One-day Internationals, ending speculation at least for the time being, of a separate skipper for one segment of the game.

A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) spokesman told Dawn Friday from Lahore that Waqar has been retained captain for Zimbabwe, the first leg of the twin tour of the African continent.

"Waqar Younis will lead both Test as well as One-day International sides during the Zimbabwe tour.

“Chairman of selectors, Wasim Bari, will announce the squads Saturday during a press conference at 1.00pm at Gaddafi Stadium,” the spokesman said.

When asked what will be the composition of the two squads to be named, the PCB spokesman informed that 15 players will be picked for the two-match Test series and 16 will form the contingent for five One-day Internationals.

PCB spokesman added the selectors may name a new vice-captain to replace Younis Khan, who was deputy to Waqar in the just concluded offshore home series against Australia.

Pakistan’s tour of Zimbabwe, which starts when the squad leaves for Harare next Friday, features Tests at Harare (Nov 9-13) and Bulawayo (Nov 16-20) and one-dayers at Bulawayo (Nov 23 and 24) and Harare (Nov 27, 30 and Dec 1).

Pakistan will then hop over to South Africa on Dec 2 for another series of five One-day Internationals and two further Tests, slated for Durban (Dec 26-30) and Cape Town (Jan 2-6).

While on the second leg of their tour, Pakistan will name their final party of 15 for the World Cup in South Africa, starting from Feb 8. Therefore, the next eight weeks will also serve as a launching pad for next year’s mega event but with Pakistan cricket in complete disarray at the moment and with morale and confidence at its lowest ebb, it will require a lot of spadework to build a squad good enough to compete against the world’s best in the toughest World Cup pool.

At the moment, the rubber-stamp selection committee of Bari and his members, Shafiq Ahmed and Abdul Raqeeb, are confronted with some difficult decisions in the aftermath of what happened in Colombo and Sharjah in recent weeks.

The availability of senior professionals like Wasim Akram, Saeed Anwar and Yousuf Youhana offers the wealth of experience that was sorely missing in the Australian Tests.

Lt Gen Tauqir Zia, who has vowed to take all matters into his hands, is the one who’ll be calling the final shots before the squads are read out in public Saturday afternoon.

Even the PCB chairman will agree that Pakistan’s major worry is the brittleness at the top of the order. Since August 2001, when Pakistan played Bangladesh in the Asian Test Championship opener in Multan, no less than seven different opening combinations have been tried in 10 Tests.

The opening stand in 16 innings of these Tests averages 31 runs per wicket. And only two partnerships were worth 100 or more. Saeed Anwar and debutant Taufiq Umar added 168 against the Bangladeshis in Multan.

Taufiq then combined with the recalled Shadab Kabir to put on exactly 100 against the same opponents at Dhaka in January.

Since then, the remaining 14 opening stands on average have yielded just 16 runs per wicket. The figures include the 91-run alliance between Taufiq and the unreliable Imran Nazir in the second innings of the Colombo Test when Australian fielders were over generous and dropped a number of sitters.

Barring the Test against New Zealand at Lahore last May, Taufiq has figured in all remaining Tests while the tried and generally found wanting individuals like Shahid Afridi, Imran Nazir, Imran Farhat and Naved Latif were exposed to the new ball.

Shadab was unceremoniously given the chop after the Bangladesh tour when he was hard done by a harsh umpiring verdict in the Chittagong Test.

Had the selectors given the left-hander an extended run, who knows Shadab, a technically sound player, might have gone from strength to strength.

Shadab, who turns 25 next month, since then had a successful Patron’s Trophy last season for Pakistan Customs, chalking up 679 runs in nine matches in the most competitive domestic first-class tournament with two centuries. He was even more prolific in the national one-day event, making 342 runs in eight matches while averaging 68.40.

Picking a cricket team in this country is arguably the most difficult job, especially in bad times. Shadab’s becoming a whimsical selection victim is just an example how things operate in the PCB. Therefore, one can only guess the likely squads for Zimbabwe tour.

Test squad: Waqar Younis (captain), Taufiq Umar, Saeed Anwar, Younis Khan, Yousuf Youhana, Faisal Iqbal, Hasan Raza, Rashid Latif, Saqlain Mushtaq, Shoaib Akhtar, Danish Kaneria, Mohammad Zahid, Mohammad Sami, Imran Farhat and Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan.

One-day squad: Waqar Younis (captain), Shahid Afridi, Saeed Anwar, Younis Khan, Yousuf Youhana, Misbah-ul-Haq, Imran Farhat, Shoaib Malik, Rashid Latif, Moin Khan, Saqlain Mushtaq, Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Abdur Rauf, Mohammad Sami/Mohammad Zahid, Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan.

Pakistan cricket team captain Waqar Younis claimed that seniors and juniors, both have disappointed the nation by losing all three Tests against Australia by humiliating margins especially in the second and third Tests at Sharjah.

Addressing a press conference Friday, Waqar said that Pakistan lost the series because it inducted several young players, however, he admitted the failure of the seniors also, including himself who failed to perform up to the expectations.

Waqar, while accepting the team’s dismal performance pointed out that their opponents were the best team in the world.

Waqar explained that personally his morale was high and he hoped the induction of Inzamamul Haq, Yousuf Youhana and more senior players would strengthen the team for its tour of Zimbabwe, starting from Nov 1.

Asked as to why he did not follow PCB chief’s example by resigning, Waqar countered that he was not a “coward” and as a cricketer he would fight against reverses.

He did not agree with a questioner that Pakistan cricket was passing through its darkest era. “Bad patches are the part of the game and I still believe the Pakistan team will again show better performance in near future”, he said.

While elaborating at length on the series, he stated that the juniors performed well in the opening Test in Colombo which raised the expectations of the nation. But the Australians did their home work in the next two Test to emerge worthy winners.

When asked if he would find a place in the One-day side as PCB is contemplating to make Test and One-day teams, separately, Waqar said “let the time come”.

Regarding team selection, he claimed that the decision nottoinclude leg-spinner Danish Kaneria in the team for the first Test in Colombo was taken after inspecting the pitch. However, the journalists were not satisfied with the response, as they contended with the response that spinners of either side had performed superbly, citing the example of Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne who took 11wickets in that Test (seven for 94 in the first innings and four for94 in the second knock) and Pakistan’s Saqlain Mushtaq capturing eight wickets (four for 136 in the first innings and four for 46 in the second).

Similarly questioned about the exclusion of Mohammad Zahid and Rana Naveed-ul- Hassan throughout the series, Waqar said that he had the policy to provide proper chances to every player. For that he could not drop Mohammad Sami who was with the teamforthelast18 months and now he should get regular chances.

He was optimistic that a strong team would be fielded for the next year World Cup to be held in South Africa, and explained that young players would get an opportunity to prove their mettle as there was a lot of cricket to be played before the mega event.

He dispelled the impression that the players could face burn out because the national side had to play four Tests and 10 One-day matches before the World Cup.

Waqar avoided a direct reply about the incident concerning Yousuf Youhana in Kenya, as a result of which the batsman was sent home by Waqar. “I have informed the PCB about that incident and I am not in a position to explain it before the press”, Waqar said,

He admitted that the decision of sending back Youhana was made in haste and the matter could have been resolved there, but added it was an unanimous decision of the team management. He promised that no such incident would be happened in future. He denied that any grouping existed in the team.

Waqar was all praise for new coach Richard Pybus and deemed him as suitable for the job than the sacked Mudassar Nazar.

anyone know if the pakistan and zimbabve series will be shown on dishnetwork pay-per-view ??? or any other channel?

**Pakistan seek coaching inspiration from Hanif and Javed
Reuters - 28 October 2002

Former Pakistan captains Hanif Muhammad and Javed Miandad have been asked to help coach the Test team ahead of next month’s tour to Zimbabwe.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has invited 68-year-old Hanif and 45-year-old Miandad, two of Pakistan’s greatest batsmen, to work with the squad in camps at Karachi and Lahore.

“The (Pakistan Cricket) Board asked me would I be interested in giving some tips and working with the batsmen who have been selected for the Zimbabwe tour and I said no problem,” Miandad told Reuters.

The Pakistan team were humiliated 3-0 by Australia in a series in Colombo and Sharjah this month. They were bowled out for their lowest Test scores of 59 and 53 in the second Test.

In one-day tournaments held in Colombo, Nairobi and Tangiers, the Pakistani batsmen also struggled for runs.

“The idea is basically that myself and Hanif Muhammad should work individually with the players and try to see if they are making basic mistakes and sort it out,” Miandad said.

“The time is very short for us to really work properly but we will do our best,” the veteran of 124 Tests said.**

Good to see Pakistan, about time taking help from two legends of the game. Both could teach the players vast experience, technique, how to deal with pressure, and many other pointers. Who else better could then Hanif and Javed? :k:

CAMPBELL TO RETURN AS ZIMBABWE CAPTAIN
John Ward - 29 October 2002

The Zimbabwe selectors have announced the Zimbabwe A team to play Pakistan
in a three-day warm-up match at Country Club in Harare, starting on Monday 4
November, and the squad for the first Test match at Harare Sports Club,
beginning on Saturday 9 November.

Alistair Campbell has been named as captain of the Zimbabwe team for the
duration of the Pakistan tour, with Andy Flower as his vice-captain.
Campbell was appointed captain of the national side in 1996 and held the
post for three years before resigning after a series of disappointing team
performance and loss of personal batting form. This time he will only be
standing in as captain for the injured Heath Streak.

Several newcomers are included in the Test squad of 18, although it is
possible none will actually play this time. They are top-order batsman Mark
Vermeulen (who does have one ODI to his credit); middle-order batsmen Stuart
Matsikenyeri who was a notable contemporary of Hamilton Masakadza and
Tatenda Taibu at Churchill School; Sean Ervine, a middle-order batsman and
medium-pacer who has played nine one-day internationals; Richard Sims, a
top-order batsman and off-spinner; Campbell Macmillan, a pace bowler who has
recently written his way into the record books with a century for Midlands
batting at number eleven; and Matabeleland all-rounder Gavin Ewing, a good
middle-order bat and off-spinner.

All are products of the Zimbabwe Cricket Academy, sponsored by CFX, except
Ewing, who was turned down two years ago as he did not reach the required
fitness level. Of those with Test experience already, Hamilton Masakadza
returns as expected, released from his studies at the University of the Free
State. Three players return after missing most or all of last season due to
injury or loss of form: Guy Whittall, Andy Blignaut and Mluleki Nkala.
Douglas Hondo is included, but his fitness is still in doubt.

There are some notable omissions. Craig Evans, despite his prolific scoring
in the Logan Cup, is omitted, but may well win a place in the one-day team.
So is Doug Marillier, who has two Logan Cup centuries in three matches to
his credit. Gavin Rennie is another whose high scores in the Logan Cup have
failed to bring him recognition. Henry Olonga is excluded, although reports
from Bulawayo suggested he is bowling really well at present.

Several of the squad players are including in the Zimbabwe A team, and will
know that a good performance there might earn them a place in the Test team.

The Pakistani team, captained by Waqar Younis, arrive in Harare on Friday
evening, 1 November, and will practise at Harare South Country Club on
Saturday and Sunday before beginning their warm-up match on Monday.

Zimbabwe first Test squad: *Alistair Campbell, Andy Flower, Grant Flower,
Dion Ebrahim, Hamilton Masakadza, Guy Whittall, +Tatenda Taibu, Andy
Blignaut, Mluleki Nkala, Travis Friend, Raymond Price, Douglas Hondo, Mark
Vermeulen, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Sean Ervine, Richie Sims, Gavin Ewing,
Campbell Macmillan.

Zimbabwe A: *Guy Whittall, Dion Ebrahim, Mark Vermeulen, Grant Flower,
Stuart Matsikenyeri, Richie Sims, Sean Ervine, +Tatenda Taibu, Mluleki
Nkala, Blessing Mahwire, Campbell Macmillan. 12th Man: Gavin Ewing.

where is ANDY FLOWER......hez the man pakistan should watch for..

I don't think PPV will be showing because India vs Westinidies one day series will be shown at the same time.

yea thats what I think tooo :frowning:

The Ashes are starting soon.
Dishnetwork always shows the Ashes, which I personally don’t mind.
Any cricket is good, but to see Pakistan is an optional plus :k: :frowning:

Wonder who watches the Ashes on PPV in North America, these dishnetwork freeks can’t figure out that there are more people who would watch PAK matches than the Ashes and still they don’t show PAK matches on top of that Prime TV doesn’t really care about cricket but they will show the stupid programs recorded in new york by the locals and spoile the whole sunday.

“dishnetwork lobbying”

Ashes is boring, thats all I know, I rather watch Pakistan vs Zimbabwe test and one day series than watch boring ashes, where we all know it is going to be one sided like everytime.

**Pakistan bid to end losing run in Zimbabwe **

HARARE (Reuters) - Pakistan have arrived in Zimbabwe for their two-test tour seeking a rapid reversal in fortunes.

Captained by fast bowler Waqar Younis, Pakistan will also play five one-day internationals before travelling to neighbouring South Africa for a test and one-day series.

Pakistan have struggled since August in limited-over tournaments in Sri Lanka, Morocco and Kenya, before being beaten in the first round of the ICC Champions Trophy and then 3-0 by Australia in a test series played on neutral territory.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman general Tauqir Zia offered to resign although his offer was declined. The PCB subsequently decided to fine players 20 percent of their match fee for each loss, and pay them a 20 percent bonus for wins.

“We’ve got to get some positive results under our belts,” Pakistan coach Richard Pybus told Reuters after the team’s arrival in Harare. "The boys just seemed to run out of form going into the one day tournaments.

“Zimbabwe are always a competitive outfit, particularly at home, and I’m sure it will be an entertaining series,”

The Pakistan selectors have recalled Wasim Akram, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Yousuf Youhana to the squad while discarding Saeed Anwar.

Hasan Raza and Mohammad Sami will return home after the tests against Zimbabwe. They will be replaced by Misbah-ul-Haq, Wasim Akram, who has not made himself available for the tests, and Azhar Mahmood for the limited overs series.

Both Pakistan and Zimbabwe have had home tours cancelled because of political considerations,

Zimbabwe Cricket Union president Peter Chingoka said: “We’ve always said it’s safe and secure for teams to tour here, and that is certainly also the case this time.”

Pakistan squad:

Test: Waqar Younis (captain), Inzamam-ul-Haq, Taufeeq Umar, Shahid Afridi, Salim Elahi, Yousuf Youhana, Hasan Raza, Faisal Iqbal, Younis Khan, Rashid Latif, Kamran Akmal, Shoaib Akhtar, Muhammad Sami, Muhammad Zahid, Saqlain Mushtaq.

One-day: Waqar Younis (captain), Inzamam-ul-Haq, Taufeeq Umar, Shahid Afridi, Salim Elahi, Yousuf Youhana, Misbah-ul-Haq, Faisal Iqbal, Younis Khan, Rashid Latif, Kamran Akmal, Wasim Akram, Azhar Mahmood, Shoaib Akhtar, Muhammad Zahid, Saqlain Mushtaq.
