Pakistan's Road To World Cup 1992

*Hey guys, I’ve uploaded this video on my youtube account. Unfortunately, it doesn’t contain the World Cup 1992 pool match against New Zealand, but it does contain the highly demanded (note: Teaser!) Pakistan Vs Australia match. I’ll keep adding more and more of my collection to my youtube account, so be on the lookout I guess. Follow the link:

The Game’s Youtube link

This video is such a clear indication of how much we had to struggle before we finally got to the Semi finals and then eventually won. I’ll be uploading one hour highlights of the semi final and the final as soon as I get time. Cheers.*

Re: Pakistan’s Road To World Cup 1992

Thanks yar game. Watching the Pakistan Australia game after a very long time, although did watch it several times in the past. It has been 14 years but still the 92 World Cup seems like something which just happened. That do or die match against Australia was full of tension when Pakistan lost their way after a perfect start from Sohail and Khan Sahib, but some lovely swing bowling from Aaqib in the start and Mushtaq’s crucial dismissals in the middle helped Pakistan’ s cause. Still remember it was Ramazan and the match ended around iftar time.

I hope to see the famous world cup song, “who rules the world” in one of your uploaded videos. Anyway, good job :k:

Re: Pakistan's Road To World Cup 1992

Thanks for sharing. The most interesting part was the leader’s aptitude of not giving up. I mean the way Javed batted consistently was amazing and despite loosing games in first half of the world cup, Imran just never looked depressed or pessimistic. It says a lot about the two legends.

Re: Pakistan's Road To World Cup 1992

Great videos, great memories. There are a few noticeable points that come to mind:

  1. Though most people remember Inzi from the semi-final and final, he really showed his class in the pool match against South Africa where he scored 48. His crisp shots there have to be seen to be believed.

  2. Even though Salim Malik didn't do much in that tournament (or was deliberately underperforming), a couple of fours he hit in the earlier matches were really classy. It's easy to forget what a joy to watch his batting was.

  3. Inzimam was run out FOUR times during the tournament. One was the "flying leap" by Jonty Rhodes, one was the run out in the semi final. The most outrageous was the one against Australia where Indian umpire Pilu Reporter gave him run-out when his bat was at least THREE FEET inside the crease. I counldn't find Inzi's fourth runout in these clips.

  4. Mushtaq seemed to pick up lots of wickets. No wonder Imran called him a bowler with a big heart.

  5. Aamir Sohail, in the initial stages was the leading scorer in the tournament.

  6. Miandad scored more than 500 runs in the tournament.

  7. Wasim Akram's yorkers were as deadly as ever. Pakistan will never have a bowler like him again. Even though Pakisnta lost to WI, Akram at least removed the newcomer Brian Lara by crushing his toe.

  8. Waqar Younis had become injured (back trouble) just before the tournament, and had to miss out.

  9. The two top teams in the tournament were Newzealand and England. NZ never lost a match until their final pool match when Pakistan beat them hands down. England never lost a match but were beaten by newcomers Zimbabwe (who hadn't won a single match).

Thanks a lot the game

Re: Pakistan's Road To World Cup 1992

The game against Australia managed to bring back memories of Pakistan’s semi final against them in 1987. In addition to that, Pakistan’s weak performance in the tournament so far, Australia having a home advantage, and the match being at WACA Perth with the fastest wicket in the world meant that Australia would have a walk in the park.

Amidst prevalent thought that Pakistan batting will collapse against the Australian bowling attack, Aamir Sohail, another unknown youngster, slaughtered the Australian attack as if he was playing in his backyard. His 76 propelled Pakistan to a reasonable total of 220, despite a late order collapse which saw Pakistan lose 6 wickets for 27 runs.

The game was still in Australia’s bag when they cruised to 116/2, having a batting lineup going all the way down to number 8. From that point onwards, all of Pakistan’s bowlers started taking frequent wickets, sending Australia all packing for 172.

Given that it was a do or die match, and that the timings of the match were such that it started at 11 AM Pakistan time, and that at 6 PM, when Australia were collapsing, most of Pakistan was breaking their fasts, and were taking a break from things, the viewer ship of the second half was immense. Naturally, when Pakistan won the game, the excitement was immense as well. The game was pitched by the media as being a revenge victory for the 1987 Semi Final in Lahore.

At the end of this match, there was an interview with Sunil Gavaskar about Pakistan’s performance, where he was asked for his expert opinion. Gavaskar, while giving his comments, smiled a little, and said “I think they have peaked at the right time in the tournament, and I think it will not be long before they end up becoming the world champions”. At this point, the interviewer started laughing, asking Gavaskar why he had passed such a bold statement, and if it wasn’t too early to state such a thing. Gavaskar just winced in reply.

Although not many saw this interview live, but the media projected it a lot in the coming days to the extent that Gavaskar became the most popular Indian in Pakistan for a while. In the post world cup victory ceremonies to honor the cricketers held in Pakistan, Gavaskar was the standard guest.

Re: Pakistan's Road To World Cup 1992

Well actually it was not after Pak-Aus match, but on the last day of the pool matches when Pakistan beat Kiwis and than Australia beat Windies, thus helping Pakistan qualifying for the semi final.

It was the live transmission after Aus-Windies match, when commentators were discussing the final 4 teams for semi finals and Gavaskar said that Pakistan are peaking at the right time and he thinks that they will win the cup.
All the Pakistani fans who were already emotional that day, regarded Gavaskar as their hero in the commentary box.
