Pakistan’s population has surged to 207.77 million, having experienced a 57 per cent increase since the last census in 1998, provisional census data presented to the Council of Common Interest (CCI) on Friday shows.
The sixth population census in Pakistan, finally carried out by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) earlier this year after a gap of nearly two decades, reveals an acceleration in the population growth rate of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), even as growth in Punjab and Sindh has slowed compared to previous results.
Pakistan houses 106.45m males, 101.31m females and 10,418 transgenders, the provisional data reveals.
The results show that 30.5m people reside in KP, 5m in Fata, 47.9m in Sindh, 12.3m in Balochistan, 2m in Islamabad, while Punjab — the largest province in terms of population — houses 110 million people.
An increase in the urban-rural ratio has been observed in all administrative units except Islamabad, which nonetheless remains the second most urbanised unit of the country.
Over 52pc of Sindh’s residents live in urban areas, which has surpassed the capital territory as the most urbanised territory of Pakistan. Close to 36.4pc of Pakistanis live in urban areas, the provisional results reveal.
Balochistan, the least urbanised of Pakistan’s provinces, has experienced the fastest average annual growth rate since 1998 of 3.37pc. Punjab’s average annual growth rate remained the slowest at 2.13pc, slightly below the national average of 2.4pc.
The provisional results exclude data from Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, which is likely to be included in the final report.
The census is likely to have important implications for the upcoming general elections, as constituencies are expected to have to be redrawn according to the newly-compiled results.
Re: Pakistan’s population has ballooned to 207.8m, provisional census results show
First, it seems that we are slowly heading towards a time where winning Punjab alone won’t give you the govt. The CPEC related projects should only increase population in KP and balochistan.
Second, it seems that 52% of sindh’s population is in urban areas. I don’t have the whole list and considering it is sindh unlike punjab, I am thinking that karachi and then hyderabad are the basis for that increase.
The interesting question is that will the national and provincial assembly seats reflect that?
As urban sindh can’t be a province yet so I think the next best scenario is the transfer of more seats to urban sindh areas and more local control to get parasitic PPP out of karachi affairs. I think that karachi deserves a very independent system considering how pee pee pee has even screwed up trash collection in the city. Rural waderas days are numbered.
Re: Pakistan’s population has ballooned to 207.8m, provisional census results show
The last census was done by NS government as well. Some telling numbers here. 52% of Sindh population is Urban, will this trigger change in Sindh Assembly and NA seats from Sindh change. If done right, MQM can truly have a chance to govern. If the national assembly, provincial assembly seats are adjusted based on this, I can see a even bigger share for N league and MQM and shrinking of PPP. Some one is telling me Hazara area in KPK has also much higher pouplation. This is solid N league area with 5 NA seats that can balloon to 8/9 and can shift power in KPK house as well.
Politics aside, census is a key planning item for any Government. This should give good information on atleast revisiting Electric demand functions, water needs, food needs. A alarming trend in Punjab is for poor Landlords to sell their land for cheap for housing schemes. Sustainability / Food supply are most important issues one should plan for after knowing how population Bomb is exploding.
Good work N govt, yet another achievement that no one else in last 20 years did anything about. When there will be a rout in 2018 elections in favor of PMLN, i think losers will have one answer, perform or perish.
Re: Pakistan’s population has ballooned to 207.8m, provisional census results show
Govt’s neglegance to protect rights of agri land owners. Because likes of saad rafique and powerful feudal are involved in land grabbing for housing societies, govt is not interested in taking action.
For you information, it is SC that forced govt to do it while govt was insisting it cannot be done without help of army.

excuse of army help is one thing the reason is here, i guess.
The fears are quite palpable in the corridors of power in Punjab: its populationpcage share might well drop if the contested figures posted after the 2011 housing census are taken into account

Re: Pakistan’s population has ballooned to 207.8m, provisional census results show
I recently read this book called How Asia Works: Studwell, Joe: 9780802121325: Amazon.com: Books
“How Asia Works”
How asian countries became so successful getting economies that are second, third in the world..
One thing thats mention is land reform..without proper land reformation in pakistan and it’ll be tough for Pakistan to grow despite the large number of people living there.
Re: Pakistan’s population has ballooned to 207.8m, provisional census results show
as usual a retarded comment. SC didnt say anything that N govt wasnt going to do, in 1998 it was NS govt that did Census so either accept others accomplishments or keep the pie hold shut. No worries for PMLN in punjab corridors, while your Jamat H average vote will stay around 5/10K, talk about bloody losers, PMLN average winning margins have been over 50K votes. If any thing you are looking at outright 2/3rd majority for PMLN in straight election even before women/minority seats. All losers combined (Q+PTI+PPP+JH) cant beat N in Punjab. Mark it or better yet see what happens in NA 120 and 2018 but than again you will be crying something.
As for Army, these people are paid from blood and sweat and with security their help is needed. Its their duty not any Ahsan. All credit to PMLN govt for doing it, the last one was due in 2008, where was this Army and SC than.
Re: Pakistan’s population has ballooned to 207.8m, provisional census results show
Did I make any claim regarding JI? Always in fantasy of baadshahat of haramkhor NS.
Jyalays are the strange makhlooq, always looking credits for themselves ![]()
Re: Pakistan’s population has ballooned to 207.8m, provisional census results show
You dont need to make a claim about Jamat Har@mi for me to point on these scum bags. No need to take credit when record speak for itself, last Census in 1998, Govt PMLN, this census, Govt PMLN, where was this SC/Fauj from 1998-2013 if this Census is because of them ? offcourse they were here, you believe what you want to believe. There is a reason 188 out of 342 NA seats belong to PMLN.
Re: Pakistan’s population has ballooned to 207.8m, provisional census results show
that is why I am asking why you have mentioned this socalled credit? It not an ehsaan of haramkhors either maybe jyalas get some share of haramkhori that is why they consider thier job as ehsaan and chant thier greatness lol.
And Pmln was absolutely denying when appeared in courts. SC went to the extent of saying if you dont want to hold it just make amendment in constitution. They were forced to do so. Apnay paon pe kaun kulharri marta hai.
Re: Pakistan’s population has ballooned to 207.8m, provisional census results show
The population has been increased since 1997 and it has reached to 207.7 million in 2017 Census. The Pakistan has 2.4 % annual population growth rate which is still high and if we did not control it in future the population can increase with rapid speed. You can use these census details to initiate future plan and development project.
Re: Pakistan’s population has ballooned to 207.8m, provisional census results show
Ok retard I can mention what ever I want, specially when next year is an election year and electorate needs to be reminded who worked and who didnt. If you dont like it, too bad. Ever heard of Marketing ? election campaign is marketing campaign to show off your accomplishment so hell yes I will give credit to PMLN. The other parties like Jamat e har@mi types who havent done any thing and right fully so get rejected in every election hate this because this is how they get exposed and lose elections. I so hope some day Jamat Har@mi leaders in paksitan meet same fate as the animals of this party in Bangladesh.
