Pakistan’s internet link crippled

Pakistan has more than 10 million internet users
A fault in an undersea cable has crippled many of Pakistan’s internet and mobile phone links overseas.
The fault occurred late on Monday and systems are still down. One internet official said it could take two weeks to repair.

The fault has been traced to a point in the Arabian Sea 35km (21 miles) south of Karachi and technicians from Dubai are travelling to make repairs.

Pakistan has more than 10 million internet users.

Disruption could also occur in India, the United Arab Emirates, Djibouti and Oman, which are also linked by the cable, Pakistani telecommunications officials said.

Ground to halt

Shahid Ahmed, chief engineer of Pakistan Telecommunication (PTCL), which operates the link, said of the repair work: "This is a highly sophisticated operation and only specialised companies can undertake such a delicate task under the sea.

We’re sitting here idle doing nothing. Trading volume has fallen by almost 80%

Rahim Kothari,
Karachi money trader

“Pakistan has no such ability.”

Mr Ahmed said the consortium of 92 countries that owns the cable had asked operating agent Singtel of Singapore to fix the fault.

He said Singtel had called in Dubai-based E-Marine but its ship could take a day just to reach the site.

Internet Service Providers Association general secretary, VA Abdi, said: "I fear it could take two weeks to repair because it will require the removal of the faulty portion of the cable.

“The cable provides Pakistan’s major outer communication means and its fault has disrupted almost all communications with the rest of the world.”

In Pakistan, much internet-based work ground to a halt.

Rahim Kothari, a foreign exchange dealer in Karachi, told the Reuters agency: “We’re sitting here idle doing nothing. Trading volume has fallen by almost 80%.”

Bad habit of Pakistani Telecoms to rely only one channel for country’s backbone. that will make them think not to rely only on one wired link.

the only option at the moment is sattelite links that can not cope with huge data and voice users in the country.

So PAk Guppies how is it out there on the ground???

Pakistan internet woes hit firms

Internet usage has been increasing rapidly in Pakistan
Pakistan’s crippled internet connection is unlikely to be fixed before the weekend, prolonging problems for firms that have been cut off from clients.
The financial sector has been hit hard, with some traders saying that demand and turnover has dipped as much as 60%.

Large banks said they have back-up systems, but even at best they are only running at three-quarters capacity.

The problems - in a country with 10 million internet users - are due to a fault in an undersea cable.

Far from smooth

Pakistan Telecommunications (PTCL) operates the link and has sent a ship to carry out repairs after the fault was traced back to a point in the Arabian Sea 35km (21 miles) south of Karachi.

The situation has improved since the problem emerged on Monday but is still a long way from running smoothly.

“Data connectivity will not be as fast as it normally is but we’ve provided satellite back-up,” said Mashkoor Hussain, vice president of operations at PTCL

Importantly, “telephone links had not been affected”, he said.

VA Abdi, head of Pakistan’s Internet Service Providers’ Association, said that his members could normally use bandwidth totalling 600 megabytes, but that at present they only had 34 megabytes available.

Even so, firms such as brokerage Live Securities are feeling the effects since the problem surfaced late on Monday night.

Tarik Hashmi, head of portfolio and equity trading, at Live told the BBC that daily trading volumes had dipped 60% from their average levels.

Fixing cables at the bottom of the sea will take time

The recent boom in the Karachi stock exchange has been partly fuelled by foreign interest and an emergence of day traders, many of which rely on internet links to carry our their business.

Domestic demand has been especially strong.

“Some of my customers are from areas of Pakistan so remote, that not even I have heard of them,” said Mr Hashmi.

The Karachi division of US banking giant Citibank said that it has been using a back-up system and had managed to limit the impact of the problem.

Even though it was only running at between 70% and 80% of full capacity, it had managed to keep all of its services operating.
