Govt approves PCB’s TV channel project

By Khalid H. Khan

KARACHI, July 22: Pakistan Cricket Board’s plans of launching a sports television channel have received a green signal from the federal government, well-informed sources told Dawn on Saturday.

According to details, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting approved PCB’s longstanding proposal after getting the go-ahead from President Pervez Musharraf who is also the board’s patron-in-chief.

The sources further said that the PCB project would be a terrestrial channel which will be launched in collaboration with the Shalimar Television Network (STN). The STN would provide all necessary technical assistance, including the link-up facility, the sources added.

The idea of launching a dedicated sports channel was first floated by PCB Chairman Shaharyar M Khan during an ad hoc committee meeting a few months ago.

Confirming the reports, Abbas Zaidi, the PCB Director Board Operations, described the development as a major boost for sports in the country.

“It’s a major achievement as far as the Pakistan Cricket Board is concerned since we have been striving to launch our own channel which could be dedicated to sports,” Zaidi said from Lahore.

The PCB official added that it will take the board at least a year before the channel is launched.

“There is a lot of spadework to be done once the Memorandum of Understanding is signed. According to our estimation, it would take about 10 to 11 months before the project is ready for launch.” Zaidi emphasised that the channel, besides promoting cricket coverage, will give due importance to all sports and major events such as hockey, football, the national championships, Asian Games and the Olympics.

“It won’t just be a TV channel for cricket. We want to give extensive coverage to other sports as well,” he pledged. “Our main aim is to provide extensive, high class coverage for the lovers of sports.”

Zaidi attributed the realization of tv channel dream to PCB chief’s keen interest in the project and praised him for playing a key role in the whole process since the time the idea was initially floated. “The chairman had expressed the desire of launching such a channel from the outset. He is obviously delighted to know that PCB is finally going to have its own channel.”

The senior PCB official also thanked President Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, the information minister and information secretary for taking keen interest in the project.

Hopefully it will be launhed soon because we will not only get better cricket coverage but we can watch other Pakistani sports as well which is really cool........Can't wait for this channel to be launched :)

Re: Pakistan's first SPORTS channel approved

Can't wait for sum1 to broadcast it online for free.

Re: Pakistan's first SPORTS channel approved

If and when it is launched in the US, I'll definetly buy it. Good job, PCB. Can't wait.

Re: Pakistan's first SPORTS channel approved

I've been hearing about it for long. It was supposed to be launched sometime last year I think!

Re: Pakistan's first SPORTS channel approved

Hear hear! Extremely glad to read this piece of news.

Part of the major reason why this project has now been given a green signal for its official launching as such was because of the decision taken by Pakistan Television (PTV) that it would not be able to telecast domestic cricket as there was no commercial interest in it. Now that a separate and an independant channel will be up and running within the next year or so, I am sure the entire coverage of domestic matches from Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Patron's Trophy to the ABN AMRO Cups will soon be broadcasted, which will not only raise the credentials and the value of our younger generation of cricketers, but it will also provide them with a major transmission and channel through which their performances will likely to not go unnoticed, as they make their headways to the National team and start knocking the doors of our selectors. Further reach in the population will only result in the positives of this sport.

Very well done and equally an important segue in the initiation of the nourishing and flourishment of our future generation!

Re: Pakistan's first SPORTS channel approved

Its a good news for sports lovers. However I have doubts about its business model though. Let us ask few questions to ourselves.

Do we have enough International cricket rights to broadcast on this channel?
Or will it be home series channel as far as International cricket is concerned?
Will it be for local Pakistani viewers or limited to middle east etc?
For domestic QAT, PT and Twenty20 cup tourneys, do we have enough sponsership to shoulder the rest of the air time when there is not enough Intl cricket?
For other sports do we have any sponsership or viewership?

It will require state of the art broadcasting technologies, netural experts, intelligent producers and creative and outstanding graphic engineers for competative presentation.

Re: Pakistan's first SPORTS channel approved

Considering we already have splendidly single-dimensional TV channels like Fashion Pakistan and QTV running already on Pakistan airwaves, PCB will be hard pressed to mess it up even if they want to. Apparently launching and running TV channels is the new rage in Pakistan.

Re: Pakistan's first SPORTS channel approved

I suspect that this is a doomed venture. There aren't enough sports in Pakistan(and neither the interest in watching sports on TV). Of all the sports, cricket (and PCB) is the only one that has any money, and their rights are sold off to ARY/TEN sports etc. The only cricket left to broadcast will be the domestic games, which noone watches. There will be SOME interest in hockey, but Pakistan doesn't play enough games in a year.

Now if they could show NFL and PGA in Pakistna, that'd be something!

Re: Pakistan's first SPORTS channel approved

This is a very good news. If they show enough cricket on it, it would be definitely beneficial for the youngsters sitting at home and watching. Also, it would take their attention away from those stupid darams.

Please give me a break! Who wants to watch NFL/PGA in pakistan? No one even understands these games except the shari babous
