i wonder if this appointment is actually done to pave a path for the Pakitani troops to be sent in Iraq ???
UNITED NATIONS, July 12 - Secretary General Kofi Annan has chosen Pakistan’s ambassador to Washington, Ashraf Jehangir Qazi, to be the United Nations top envoy to Iraq, it was announced Monday.
A veteran diplomat with an outgoing manner who has spent four decades in his country’s foreign service, Mr. Qazi, 62, fills the position left empty by the death of Sergio Vieira de Mello, who was killed along with 21 others when the United Nations Baghdad headquarters was bombed on Aug. 19.
Mr. Qazi will be heading the “leading role” assigned the United Nations in last month’s Security Council resolution on Iraq, but it may be some time before he takes up his post in Baghdad because of continuing concerns about the level of protection there for foreign workers.
Since Pak is unwilling to send anyone in Iraq otherwise, this is probably the only way to put a Pakistani in Iraq. And that too in a role where the last man came home in a coffin. Shabash hai, bhai.
Anyway, since when did Kofi start sending ambassadors of other countries as UN envoys? Mr Qazi might as well tatoo a cross on his forhead similar to this
I don't like it. Why send someone to a place whose status is so dispued. The government is not fully considered legitimate by Iraqis themselves. Why does the Pakistani governement have to scare us everyday with some thing new......---we may send troops.....no we will not...we may do this........no we won't........ May Allah guide the rulers and lets pray Ashraf Jahangir Qazi remains safe in Iraq. Agay Allah malik. Goli lagi to Allah ki masheeat.
Being considered for this role is good for Pakistan itself but it may create problems for ordinary Pakistanis in Iraq, they may become targets of malitia men.
